Oh yeah, change the name to make everybody feel "better about themselves"?

I worked for the Welfare Department in the early 1980s, witnessed the Welfare Queens. Changing the name from Welfare Department to Department of Human Services did nothing but make limo liberals feel "good".

The sad thing is it seem to be Republicans pushing for this. The Republican party is slowly but surely leaving many of us in the dust.

What about
Free lunch for immigrant spongers?

What about
Free lunch for illegal aliens?

In this Republican-controlled state of Florida, there is a campaign ad soliciting f potential food stamp recipients. The county busses in Miami, for instance, are running those ads.

Even illegal aliens are encouraged to apply. They even tell the illegal aliens how to skirt the requirement for a Social Security Number (SSN)

Outrages statements by the State of Florida:

Example 1:
Receiving food stamps does not make you a public charge so your immigration status is not affected

Example 2:

If you were not eligible for an SSN because of your immigration status, [illegal alien] you may be eligible for a non-work SSN to receive the benefits that require one. If you need an SSN, we can help you apply for one. Non-applicants will not be required to provide an SSN or proof of immigration status.

How does a child receive food stamps? I thought the parents would have to apply.

The hispanic supermarket near my house accepts food stamps for cigarettes.

Turn them in.

You should report that place. That is flat-out illegal.

Name it the "Magic Card". It magically refills itself each month. Oh, and be sure it has a big grasshopper on the front.

Of course.

The fraud starts with the state employees who are encouraged to break the rules and give out food stamps to non-needy people and illegal aliens.

If we simply got rid of all forms of welfare, the illegal immigration problem would solve itself.

It became a nationwide program in 1974.

Which correlates with the increased incline of the 'slippery slope'.

As long as we pay stupid/lazy/shiftless people to breed, they will increase in number. Our country will become more & more ignorant as a result.

(I say this as a person who was once a food stamp recepient for a couple of years.)

In response to the several posters who have chosen to dump on food stamp recipients:

The poor in America will be fed. The issue is how to do it. Food stamps are limited use vouchers. The system utilizes the private sector. What would you prefer instead: direct government commodity distributions (Bill Buckley once proposed this) or special government supermarkets for the poor?

Yes, our goal is to wean people off welfare. But for the residual welfare programs that remain, I am generally in favor of vouchers and a market orientation as opposed to massive public bureaucracies. This goes for food, health care (i.e. Medicaid, which should be voucherized), and housing assistance. The logic applies to schools as well, though these are not welfare institutions.

As a final general point, it would be desirable to count all transfer payments -- including food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, housing assistance, and other forms of welfare -- as taxable income. Poor people would still not be making enough to pay much in taxes, but they would begin to see how much is actually being spent on them. This would tend to erode the idea that it's all free money and, at the margins, it would help police fraud and rationalize the transition from welfare to work.

Thank you. I was just going to point out that corporate agriculture is the reason these free food programs proliferate and survive. The midwest, farm-belt members of Congress line up with the hard-core liberals to keep it going. Neither faction cares that they've turned generations of Americans into dependent parasites.
