Hopefully, Cardinal Rodriguez, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, soon will head to jail for harboring criminals, where he shall remain as long as he shall live. He shouldn't be seen around the Vatican anymore--except for his defrocking ceremony.

i don't think they get a ceremony for defrocking. LOL! (Law just left Boston, for example.)

Sara -- is this the bishop with the different last name that you posted about in the previous thread? Maybe the DMN needs some edcuation about what this man's REAL name is.

You mean Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga the leading candidate for Pope? The way that his name is presented is a tad misleading.

Yes,Salvation,the very same!! I swear they are trying to create two identities for him,in order to salvage their plans for him to become the next Pope.

First two paragraphs of this article ...

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – A prominent candidate to succeed Pope John Paul II recently sheltered a priest who is an admitted child molester and now an international fugitive, The Dallas Morning News has learned.

Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez, who heads the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, put the Rev. Enrique Vásquez to work in two remote parishes from last year until March. The priest had fled criminal accusations in his native Costa Rica in 1998, then served in at least two U.S. dioceses before running again and spending time at a clergy treatment center in Mexico.

Okay, this says "prominent." My bad. But my question remains ... candidates according to who? The Vatican or the DMN?

Ah! Now I see what you're asking. I didn't even notice that the DMN was speaking of the same man. Different last name threw me off course. I wonder if this is this a ploy or an oversight by the DMN.

Yes, very mislelading. Makes me wonder why they are not using his full name. Text box space???? LOL!

I think the Dallas Morning News is merely speculating. Little do they realize that it is the Holy Spirit who guides the selection of a Pope.

(And not them.)

Good question. I'm going to be in Dallas next month -- shall I give them a call? LOL!

Better yet, why don't you, Al?

The Military is also having problems with don't ask, don't tell.
--------

770 Specialists Discharged for Being Gay
Military Discharged 770 Key Specialists Under 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Policy

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO June 20, 2004 — Even with concerns growing about military troop strength, 770 people were discharged for homosexuality last year under the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, a new study shows.

The figure, however, is significantly lower than the record 1,227 discharges in 2001 just before the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Since "don't ask, don't tell" was adopted in 1994, nearly 10,000 military personnel have been discharged including linguists, nuclear warfare experts and other key specialists.

Yes,and on the other thread someone responded to me regards this matter by explaining that in Latin American countries it is common to use the mother's name rather than the father's when addressing someone or referring to them. Since I am from a heavily Hispanic community and have several close acquaintances that are Mexican,I know that it occurs at times,in certain circumstances,but seldom in Church circles.

Has anyone heard of Cardinal Estevan,Cardinal Castrillon or Cardinal Lopez? We usuallly hear of them as Cardinal Neves,Cardinal Hoyos and Cardinal Trujillo.Occasionally,the entire hyphenated name is used,as in Castrillon-Hoyos/Lopez-Trujillo but generally the name prior to the hyphen is dropped,that would be the mother's name.

Continuing on with my conspiracy theory, "social justice" ideotheology trumps cleaning the Church of sexually abusing priests and their protector prelates.It is also the beginning of discerning and identifying the two factions in the "progressive" wing of the Church. This is all good news.

I've never even heard of this particular cardinal that they claim is a "prominent candidate to succeed the Pope." And there aren't even any odds posted for him at paddypower.com. :-)

The favorite is Dionigi Tettamanzi.

But, you know the saying: the man who goes into the conclave a Pope, will come out a cardinal.

Salesians Say Press Reports Are Off the Mark
Congregation Cites Dallas Morning News

ROME, JUNE 21, 2004 (Zenit.org).- The Salesians have issued a warning about a negative newspaper campaign targeted at religious congregations and orders in the United States.

"It all began with an investigation carried out by The Dallas Morning News," said a press statement issued today by the congregation.

The Salesian statement said that the newspaper asserted that religious involved in cases of sexual abuse of minors "are systematically moved from one country to another to remove them from judicial investigations."

"Insofar as the Salesian congregation is concerned, it is emphasized that this does not correspond to the truth," the statement affirmed.

The press statement came in the wake of the Dallas newspaper's story Saturday about a Salesian it described as a convicted child molester. The priest is now working pastorally in the South Pacific, out of reach of authorities in Australia, who want him on more charges, the newspaper said.

The statement said that Salesian superiors in the United States follow certain "lines of conduct" when allegations of abuse surface.

"The congregation speedily examines every accusation of sexual violence against minors to verify, first of all, its veracity," the statement said.

Second, it said the congregation "offers psycho-pedagogical support to the victims and, if necessary, to their families."

Third, if the one who commits this type of abuse is a member of the Salesians, four measures are adopted:

-- "He is immediately removed from every pastoral and educational assignment so that he will have no contact with minors";

-- "He is entrusted to experts to help him in his recovery from the psychological and spiritual point of view";

-- "He is encouraged to collaborate actively with justice and to recognize his own responsibility";

-- "Each case is followed up by the inspectorate to which the brother belongs and not by the general direction."

Finally, the statement emphasizes that the congregation "is struggling precisely for the protection of minors against abuses of all kinds (sexual violence, child labor, military recruitment)."
