Dublin, Ireland When President Bush visits Ireland June 25-26, he will be confronted by a gaggle of leftist loonies coalescing under the banner, "When Bush comes to shove." They're against the war in Iraq, you see.
They held no demonstrations to protest the torture and murder by Saddam Hussein over three decades; neither have they managed to get upset about human rights violations in China, the atrocities committed by various African dictators, or a host of other "evildoers," as Mr. Bush likes to call them.
In fact, memory fails to recall any protests against military actions by the Irish left against President Clinton in Bosnia, or his ineffective missile strikes on Iraq. The Irish left, and their Continental brethren, reserve their disdain for President Bush.
A poster designed for the occasion depicts Mr. Bush with blood dripping from one hand. In the other hand, he is carrying an "American flag," which has a dollar sign where the stars are supposed to be. He is bent over with a leer on his face.
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, the equivalent of America's Federal Communications Commission, has prohibited the Irish Anti-War Movement from advertising on radio and TV. That's too bad. Everyone in a free society should not only have the right to free and paid speech, but also the right to make fools of themselves to as wide an audience as possible.
Consider these quotes from some prominent leftists (authorship and context will be held until the end for maximum dramatic effect): "European discomfort with the president, however, goes beyond the political differences that preceded and will outlast his presidency. It has, as well, a personal basis. He appears to Europeans to be ill equipped for the responsibility he bears, a kind of cowboy figure, bellicose, ignorant, with a simplistic view of the world ." [1]

Excellent article by Cal Thomas.
He did, however, get one of his citations wrong. No. 2 cites "a Whitehouse spokesman," when it was actually Mary McGrory who was definetly NOT a WH spokesperson, and who wrote for the Wash. Post.
Otherwise, a great play on the...OOPS! I won't give it away.
OK I stole it from Rush.
The quote by the White House spokesman was within the longer quote by Mary McGrory which was cited by Thomas.
It was a great piece. But your criticism is incorrect; that reference to a white house spokesman was in the original excerpt; Thomas made no mistake.
ping
The Celtic nationalists sicken me.
Does Mr. Zionist Conspirator disapprove of nationalism? Why? Just what is your beef? Don't keep us in suspense.
Thanking you in advance. Yours Celtically, Hibernius Druid
You're both right about the quote. I failed to see the single quotation marks withn the double quotation marks. And I am delighted to see that Cal Thomas did NOT make a mistake.
Grumble, grumble, grumble...you can't get away with anything on FR. (Guess that's why I love it.)
Let's see now....maybe it was better when the Irish were busy killing each other off and not putting their worthless two cents into serious matters like the War on terror....Oh I remember now, Ireland most likey still has it's own brand of terrorism....Seems they were called the I.R.A.!!!!
No suspense whatsoever. The Celts are sitting in the catbird seat between the right and left. On the one hand they are the ultimate white Northwestern European "aryans" and on the other they have been part of the leftwing socialist "national liberation" movement for over two centuries. In other words, they get a free pass from both sides.
I doubt if any other European people other than the Irish could get away with such an ethnocentric celebration as St. Patrick's Day.
You're so muddled by leftist PC concerns about "ethnocentrism" that you can't distinguish it from ethnic pride, something no American immigrant group need ever sacrifice.
Indeed we celebrate our roots, whether they be Irish, Italian, German, whatever. And we wear American flags on our lapels in witness to our patriotism. The two notions aren't mutually exclusive.
Nor are all Irish leftists, though that's another distinction bigots like yourself have difficulty making. Also, Mr. Z.C., you haven't explained your (probably racist) "honorary Africans" slur. But, consider the source: You probably think all Celts are Irish, not knowing whence the Celts originated and in how many nations they settled over their long history.
Last, a Saint Patrick's Day parade isn't a display of "nationalism," another term you bandy about in your muddled, befuddled way, like an amadaun. Slainte.
Indeed we celebrate our roots, whether they be Irish, Italian, German, whatever. And we wear American flags on our lapels in witness to our patriotism. The two notions aren't mutually exclusive.
Ah, but I notice that the English are missing from your little ethnic diversity party. In fact, they serve as the abstract host population against which all the "beautiful" ethnics stand out. Has anyone in the United States ever heard of St. George's Day? I think not (and I won't even bring up Orange Day, which couldn't even be observed in the United States without a riot breaking out). Why should I, as an Anglo-Saxon (and a poor one at that) look on the rest of you (Irish, Armenians, whatever) and be "just an American" while everyone else has some ancient mystical motherland halfway around the world? I guess you might say I suffer from "hyphen envy."
Nor are all Irish leftists, though that's another distinction bigots like yourself have difficulty making.
I am aware of that. However, I can't help but resent the fact that I have no national heritage of any kind while the Irish and other Celts are treated by the Left the same way as are American Indians and Australian aborigines. I merely point out that the Irish Left (unlike the American Left) is nationalist and patriotic, even though I'm sure George Washington was far to the Left of Brian Boru. Even the Irish Republican Socialist Movement (which is as Communist as you can get) invokes the "eight hundred year struggle," which was hardly Marxist eight hundred years ago.
Also, Mr. Z.C., you haven't explained your (probably racist) "honorary Africans" slur.
Yes I did.
But, consider the source: You probably think all Celts are Irish, not knowing whence the Celts originated and in how many nations they settled over their long history.
Oh come now. I am aware of Galatia in Asia Minor, Spanish and Polish-Ukrainian Galicia, and Gaul, as well as the Brythonic and Goidelic Celts. I applaud the preservation and survival of these languages despite overwhelming odds (from the English in the past and nowadays from the French). I have even studied Welsh and occasionally listen to Celtic languages on the Internet just to get the sound of them (including Breton, Manx, and Cornish). But that doesn't change the fact that in a world where white racists claim that Communism is a plot against the "white race" the Celts (and not just the Irish) are a Leftist cause celebre.
My intitial post was not meant as an attack on all Irish or Celts, but merely to point out that the Irish Left, which attacks America, its history, and its patriotism, considers itself the psychic heir of ancient mystical nationalism that it condemns in others. That's all I was saying.
