He ran as an outsider in last year's recall election, promising to change a system he said was corrupted by special-interest groups.
But as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger enters his first budget-and-bill-signing season, he has raised more money than any previous California governor this early on, including predecessor Gray Davis.
Since taking office last November, Schwarzenegger has reported accepting more than $12 million in contributions - twice what Davis, a Democrat, raised in his first six months in office and about 10 times the amount fellow Republican Pete Wilson raised.
Schwarzenegger's appearances at fund-raisers for the California Republican Party and some GOP legislative candidates drew close to $5 million more, party officials say. He now counts among his large donors several who were key to Davis early in his tenure.

Oh please don't make me barf this early in the morning.
The difference between Schwarzenegger and Davis, Bustamante, and yes, even McClintock is that Arnold's money if coming directly from the people of the state he has inspired. Davis, Bustamante, and McClintock all got the majority of their money from special interests like Indian Gaming Tribes. Plus Davis had his whole "pay to play" scheme going, on top of all that.
The key question being, what's he selling?
Real estate interests, Wall Street bankers, energy interests, ag interests...
Yeah right. Arnold doesn't belong to special interests because he conveniently redefined those as tribes and unions. He instead belongs to the same "very special interests" that Davis did (particularly in energy). Read the whole post.
So, is he raising money for Bill Jones? Has anyone seen hide or hair of Jones? I got a letter from his campaign asking for a contribution, saying that Boxer is vulnerable. News flash: She's not vulnerable if nobody knows who Bill Jones is - they'll vote on name recognition. And I must say, I'm not exactly a devoted Jones fan.
Question is if Arnold's a true Republican when is he going to start campaigning for President Bush here in Calif?
Or is he more preoccupied with trying to give illegals' drivers' licenses? where are his priorities?
Nice answer!
AS is a tradeoff for the Kennedy family to get back into major politics and if they can use the republican party to do it they will. They do not care about Pres Bush, only their own little Camelot.
Arnold will be there for both President Bush and Bill Jones when the time is right.
It's too early for a general election campaign. You may notice that most all of Bush's campaigning has been to define Kerry early, not to actually campaign on Bush's 2nd term vision.
Arnold may have outpaced others in California in fundraising, but its still only a measly $17 million total. Hrdly the $200 million Bush has raised. That's not enough to go blowing this early.
When it comes time for voters to start making up their minds in the election, Arnold will be there to pack a punch.
hooohaaaaaa!
"anti-capitalism anarch(o)-syndicalists"
say that 3 times fast. lol
Of course there are a whole group of them left, don't you know they are catholic, they don't believe in birth control unless you abort. Ted Kennedy, Maria's uncle and Arnold are close, get real...he's married to Maria Kennedy Shriver.
She's a Kennedy, didn't you see her swinging her hair on The Tonight Show, she is loving this, as she claims otherwise...a democrat flip-flop like Kerry.
Several of Kennedy children are in politics in Mass and other places.
One doesn't have to be in favor with Wall Street to have major political aspirations.
Equine feces.
Thank you , Now let's win Calif for GW and Btw your work at Counterpunch is great , keep up the great work, happy Fathers' day to you
You would rather he campaign for Bush than protect the driver's license? Illegals had the license in their pocket...almost. He got it repealed. He hasn't caved. You guys get all excited about figments of your imaginations. By now you should realize what "We'll get it done" means when he talks about the DLs. Emphasis on "Done".
How many children did Robert have? I thought is was close to 11 more or less.
