BLM sends Greenpeace packing

Environmental group given 48 hours to dismantle Forest Rescue Station

GRANTS PASS — The Bureau of Land Management gave Greenpeace 48 hours to dismantle its summer encampment in Southern Oregon on Tuesday after the international environmental group tried to disrupt logging on a nearby timber sale.

BLM had been reviewing a special recreation permit for Greenpeace to exceed the 14-day camping limit on federal land to conduct public education programs. But the agency revoked its preliminary authorization following a protest where a 20-foot steel shipping container was used to block loggers from the Soukow timber sale outside Glendale.

"This represents a violation of trust and we are disappointed that Greenpeace has chosen to violate our agreement," BLM spokeswoman Karen Gillespie said from BLM's Medford District office. "Greenpeace illegally blocked a nearby public road and interfered with a legal, active timber sale."

Calling for an end to commercial logging of old growth forests on public lands, Greenpeace established its "Forest Rescue Station" on June 1 on BLM land about 35 miles west of Grants Pass next to the planned Kelsey-Whisky timber sale.

More than a dozen people were living at the station, which included a green geodesic dome serving as a visitor center, a bio-diesel fire truck, a solar-powered video editing studio, a platform hanging from the branches of a tree, a field kitchen and tents for sleeping.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Ginger Cassady said they had not decided how to respond to the eviction order, but felt they had not violated the terms of the permit, because it applied only to the site where it was located.

BLM said it was willing to continue considering the special recreation permit, but asked for additional information on the impacts of the camp.

BLM Glendale Resource Area acting field manger Joan Resnick gave the eviction order to Greenpeace members during a meeting at the BLM's Smullin Visitors Center in the community of Rand.

"They are not allowed to camp at the current site, and must remove all property within 48 hours of the letter that we are hand-delivering," Gillespie said.

What a difference a republican administration makes. During the Clinton years this communist scum was accorded all manner of allowances and favors by the fascist pig Babbitt and his goosestepping clowns. If I were in charge I would have packed this hippy garbage inside their container, locked it and dropped it off in the middle of a logging congress convention.

... but felt they had not violated the terms of the permit,...

And a recorded Bill Murray, doing his piano bar rendition, sang "Feelings" in the background!
