Ooooh! Maybe that is the "big story." I can see the screaming headline now: Bush Secretly Converts to Catholicism. Then, virtually everything else wrong in the world could also be his fault.

You know what John? You're an idiot.

I said my father left the day JFK died. That's what he has to do with it.

And I haven't been ATTACKING the church. I've been saying they don't have the moral authority to condemn a war which freed millions of people when they themselves have such an immoral problem that has has been going on for decades.

They have ruined so many young lives in order to give their homosexual and pedophile priests a thrill. YOu want to defend that? Go for it. BUt don't write to me again!

Regardless of the formal position of the church of abandoned spouses who are not yet divorced, MANY, MANY separated non-yet-divorced people were told they could not receive the sacrament.

I have no doubt this is true, given some of the goofy stuff priests told Catholic laymen before Catholic laymen learned the difference for themselves.

"Divorce is a sin" was drummed into the head of every good little Catholic kid.

There are homosexuals involved? Where did you hear that???? /sarcasm

If you've seen it covered anywhere in the mainstream media -- except to flatly deny that it's a homosexual thing -- let me know. Pedophilia's their story, and they're sticking to it; and we all know homosexuals are no more likely to molest children (young men?) than heterosexuals. < See your /sarcasm and raise you one! >

Just yell "Catholic Basher" whenever someone posts anything that is not "glowing" about the Catholic Church and you will be praised by these types and be forever on their "Ping" lists.

My father walked out the door when on the day JFK was killed. My sister was 3 weeks old. There were 4 of us kids. The priest came the following week to tell my mother none of us could receive the sacrament.

Something about this doesn't ring true. Your father's decision to abandon his family would have absolutely no impact on the standing of his wife and children in the eyes of the Church. I would challenge anyone who makes such an assetion to cite a specific source in Catholic doctrine in support of that claim.

It is only when a divorced person chooses to remarry that they cannot receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Divorced Catholics can receive the Sacraments as long as they don't remarry!

You were given faulty information. Campion has it right in #50.

As in any organization there is always bad. What we hope for the most is that the house will be cleaned out. And cleaned out good this time. If this is true, I can imagine the meltdown that will occur, including here.

I know that this is a horrible thing, but I hate to see the Church slammed so badly when there is no more problem with sex offenders in the Catholic Church than in any other denomination. Will we see stories of rabbis molesting young boys during Hebrew school? About Baptist ministers fooling around with the kids at their churches? How about Methodist youth ministers on illicit camping trips with they boys at their churches? I'm not saying we shouldn't clean this up, but it smacks of anti-Catholicism when it's just OUR Church that is on the front pages. *sigh*

Remember, though, that "the gates of Hell will not stand against" the Church. I take comfort in that.

And since when is the church opposed to 25 million people being freed, anyway? They're aren't opposed, and you know it! The church opposes war until the last resort, and did not think Iraq was at last resort stage.

I think you are mixed up, friend

I'm not your friend, and you're willfully spreading whatever lies you think will hurt the Church.

Do you not know that Catholics who divorced were not allowed to receive the sacrament in the early 60's? Tens of thousands of good Catholics were refused the sacrament for doing NOTHING wrong but being abandoned.

You're right about the situation. I remember it was even worse in the 50s. As far as I know, though, it was priests who were either badly educated in the faith or had other problems.

Peach, we're trying to help by telling you the truth.

You are always welcome to come back to the Church. (And so is your Mom -- tell her to go talk with a priest.)

If true and I do not doubt it, then Father John is a moron. Why did your family not just go to another Catholic church? Father John did not excommunicate your family, he simply exerted a power trip. No man will ever stop me from pursuing my faith.

I was the oldest at 7 and so was hardly in a position to go to church alone with my siblings so WE could receive the sacrament.

Before you said that the priest told your family that none of you could receive.

Tell me ONE lie I've told about the church?

That they refused to let separated/divorced women and men receive the sacrament? Nope. That happened to tens of thousands of people.

That they have let priests sexually abuse children? Nope. THat isn't a lie. It came out in their hearings that they KNOWLINGLY moved "problem" priests. Moved them so they could abuse sexually more unsuspecting children.

You want to defend that? Go right ahead.

I have stated on this thread that I miss the church. I loved the church. But it has a past. And it isn't pretty. But be an appeaser. Let the priests keep abusing children and ruining lives. Then look yourself in the mirror and keep telling yourself that is Christian.

I really feel a great deal of pain for catholics. I just can't help but feel that catholics as a whole are getting a bad rap.

Thank you.
