A strong explosion shakes the center of Baghdad

A strong explosion shook Thursday morning the center of Baghdad and a smoke escaped close to the building which sheltered the old Iraqi Parliament, noted a journalist of the AFP.

The American army did not have immediate information on the nature of the explosion.

Previously several series of explosions were heard in the night and at dawn in Baghdad, without making damage apparently, according to American military sources which gave a report on controlled "explosions "of ammunition.

Explosion heard in central Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- An explosion was heard in central Baghdad on Thursday, and a cloud of brown smoke rose above the city.

The U.S. military did not immediately comment on the blast.

An explosion, due apparently to a booby-trapped car, occurred Thursday morning in front of a center of recruitment of the paramilitary force of Iraqi civil defense (ICDC) in Baghdad, making killed and casualties, according to a journalist of the AFP on the spot.

The explosion occurred at the time or of tens of young Iraqi were gathered to engage in the Body of Iraqi civil defense (ICDC - auxiliaries of the army). Bodies of killed and casualties were visible in front of the center where first-aid workers activated themselves.

The deflagration with 08H50 local (04H50 GMT) shook the center of Baghdad and a smoke is escaped building located close to airport Al-Mouthanna. The American army did not have immediate information on the nature of the explosion, but a police officer on the spot indicated that it was about a booby-trapped car.

A report on Fox stated it was not a terrorist act but a controled explosion. I hope this is the same explosion they are talking about.

Earlier there was a report of explosions, but then they said those were controlled explosions, blowing up some munitions.

I don't know whether this is a new one.

Baghdad Blast Said to Be at Muthanna Airport

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A loud explosion echoed over central Baghdad on Thursday and a plume of smoke rose from the west of the city, witnesses said.

Ambulance sirens were heard after the blast, which Arab satellite television channels said had been caused by a car bomb at Muthanna airport, where there is a U.S. military base.

The U.S. military had no immediate information on the explosion, but a spokesman said they were checking.

Ambulances raced to the scene, which is near a former military airport. Iraqi police cordoned off the area. Several vehicles, including an armored car, were damaged.

Car Bomb Kills at Least Two Near Iraq Army Base

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded near a U.S.-Iraqi military base in Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least two people, a Reuters witness said.

The blast went off at an Iraq army recruiting base located in the city's heavily fortified Muthanna airport, where U.S. troops are also based.

How would you run it? Seems like wars are just not being fought "correctly" any more. What happened to the good old days when both sides lined up against each other in a huge field and didn't start shooting until noon.

Car explodes outside Iraqi army recruiting station, wounding dozens

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A car drove into a crowd and exploded Thursday outside a recruiting station for the Iraqi army, injuring dozens, police said.

The Arab satellite station al-Jazeera reported that at least 15 people were killed, but the figure could not immediately be confirmed.

About 100 volunteers were trying to enter the recruiting center when a car smashed into the crowd, said Capt. Hani Hussein of the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps. He said dozens were injured.

Ambulances raced to the scene, which is near the Muthanna military airport. Iraqi police cordoned off the area. Several vehicles, including an armored car, were damaged.

Blood and debris was scattered across a four-lane highway.
