Terrorist sent to Psych Ward!

COLUMBUS, Ohio A federal magistrate on Wednesday ordered a man charged with plotting to blow up a shopping mall to be transferred to a federal psychiatric facility to determine if he is mentally competent.

The evidence Magistrate Mark Abel used to determine why Nuradin Abdi should be sent to the facility has been sealed.

Authorities have accused Abdi, 32, of plotting to blow up a mall with admitted al-Qaida member Iyman Faris, who is now imprisoned for never-acted-on plans to sabotage the Brooklyn Bridge.

The indictment against Abdi, a Somali national, was unsealed on Monday.

More than 100 supporters gathered outside the courthouse, and family and friends planned to talk to reporters about the charges against Abdi after the hearing.

Authorities have a third suspect under surveillance and are trying to determine how many others might have been involved, U.S. Attorney Gregory Lockhart said.

"I don't know that we know at this point know who all the people he (Abdi) was associated with are," Lockhart said. "There are people that we are proactively doing things with as we speak that are short of charging them."

The Joint Terrorism Task Force searched the Columbus apartment last week of the third suspect, The Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday, citing unidentified federal sources. The man shared the apartment with Faris, the newspaper said. Federal officials have refused to say what they were seeking.

Abdi is charged with providing material support to al-Qaida, conspiracy and document fraud. If convicted, he could get up to 80 years in prison.

Oh great. Now he'll be released in time to pull off his big jihad. I agree with you; they're ALL freakin' crazy! Does that mean we should give them ALL a pass by way of the insanity plea? I don't think so!

Well, I suppose we should wait and see what happens. But my first reaction to this is that we really need to get rid of these lousy judges.

Relax. He is being evaluated to see if he is competent to stand trial. That is determined by his mental status now, whether he is aware of the nature of the charges against him, has understanding of the adversarial nature of the judicial process, and its actors, whether he is able to assist counsel in his own defense, or whether by reason of mental illness he does not meet those critieria.

If he is found not competent, he will be committed for psychiatric treatment in a locked unit, to be "restored to competency." Treatment will include antipsychotic drugs.
When it is determined that he is restored to competenc y, the prosecutor will be notified and he can be bound over for trial. This has nothing to do with being "not guilty by reason of insanity," which is determined by his mental status at the time of the crime. What little I know about this case, I doubt there is any chance at all of an insanity defense.

This is why terrorists should be kept out of our regular justice system. It's bad enough that rapists and murderers are released on technicalities. Mostly they kill people one at a time. We can't afford to play that game with jihad monkeys who want to kill by the thousands.

There you go again, ruining people's breathless indictments of a runaway judiciary with logic and facts.
