2004 Bush Ad Controversy Settled - Statement by Stephen Moore, President of the Club for Growth

Statement by Stephen Moore, President of the Club for Growth

"I just concluded a very pleasant conversation with Ms. Joanne Drake, Chief of Staff to President Reagan and Mrs. Reagan. Ms. Drake asked, and I immediately agreed, that in deference to the wishes of the Reagan family, the Club will hold off on airing our latest commercial for one week. Ms. Drake made it clear that she had no problem with the contents of the TV commercial.

"The TV ad shows video footage of President Reagan at the Berlin Wall proclaiming those memorable words: 'Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!' I believe that this ad does honor to President Reagan and reminds all Americans of how Reagan won the Cold War and liberated millions of people around the globe from tyranny through his strategy of peace through strength.

"The Club for Growth was formed, in part, because of the legacy of Ronald Reagan's beliefs in limited government and tax cuts. We believe George Bush shares that belief and we will do all we can to educate the America people about the similarities between Reagan and Bush and the dissimilarities between Reagan and John Kerry."

If you read the text, you'll see that they agreed to delay it by a week. To me that suggests that it will be shown---with permission no less. Then again, who knows what will change in a week.

It's understandable if the Reagan family doesn't necessarily support any ads but that sure beats the hatred CBS and other liberals pile on against the man's legacy.

Ms. Drake made it clear that she had no problem with the contents of the TV commercial.

That's a big difference then what was reported earlier

And they aren't asking to much to delay the airing of the ad .. very understandable

The media will cover Ron and Patti and their anger over it all and will completely overlook this official statement from Nancy, and those from colleagues who knew him best as well.

Someone with sense other than Ron Jr. got to Nancy.

Glad it is gone as quickly as it appeared.

Perhaps todays column by Frank Rich likening the caravan to the Reagan Library to the OJ murders will remind the Reagans what the left is all about.

The left is pathetic, they have no one to look to that comes close to the success and popularity of RR and it eats them up alive, I love it.

Yea, baby. If it weren't for the liberals complaining about the ad, we would never have heard about this conservative "club". Now I can donate money to this new group who airs conservative ads.

Take that, moveon.org!!

SHOW THE AD!

Who the hell cares what Joanne Drake, or Patti and Ron Jr. think?
They didn't defeat Communism, and their opinions are irrelevant. The ad's content is devastating to Kerry (although the production value is quite crappy and should be improved). How dare the "Reagan Family" say that the ad "implies an endorsement" of Bush--who the hell do they think an alive, sentient Reagan would endorse? Kerry???

The Club went through this with Ted Kennedy and the Commie Clan over JFK's vs Bush's tax cuts and held firm. A one-week hiatus is quite fair on this issue--but they MUST run this ad again when that is done.

Addendum: I am glad Nancy prevailed on this. When she departs this earth the media is going to treat Ron Jr as RWR's official standard-bearer, and we must fight that.
