SENATE VOTE ON AGJOBS AMNESTY BILL
Citizens Lobby ^ | June 16, 2004 | Scott A. Lauf

Posted on 06/16/2004 4:27:07 PM PDT by yoe

Senators Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Larry Craig (R-ID) are trying to sneak through their AgJOBS amnesty/"guestworker" bill (S. 1645) as an amendment (S. Amdt 3396) to the currently pending National Defense Authorization Act (S. 2400). The disastrous AgJOBS bill could grant amnesty to as many as three million illegal aliens in the U.S. and bring in hundreds of thousands of new immigrant workers.

A vote on the Senate floor could come this week -- possibly tomorrow -- and Sens. Kennedy and Craig have every intention of attaching their amnesty bill to every piece of legislation on the Senate floor between now and the final recess of the year.

Please Call, Fax, Write & E-Mail your Senators TODAY and tell them to vote "NO" on S. Amdt. 3396 to S. 2400. Tell them "NO" on AgJOBS amnesty! (If your Senator is already a co-sponsor, then urge him to withdraw his sponsorship!) Click this link below for contact info:

Difficult to tell the Dems from the Pubs any more

=====================

The text of S. AMDT. 3396 has not yet been received from GPO

Bills are generally sent to the Library of Congress from the Government Printing Office a day or two after they are introduced on the floor of the House or Senate. Delays can occur when there are a large number of bills to prepare or when a very large bill has to be printed.

===============================

From NumbersUSA legislative alert:

Stealth effort to pass AgJOBS amnesty underway

Our Capitol Hill team has just learned that Senators Larry Craig (R-ID) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA) have put the AgJOBS amnesty, S. 1645, on a back-door, fast-track to becoming the eighth amnesty. Sens. Craig and Kennedy have filed the entire AgJOBS amnesty as an amendment, S. Amdt 3396, to the National Defense Authorization Act, S. 2400.

As you know, public opposition to this amnesty bill has prevented S. 1645 from coming to the floor of the Senate for a vote even though the AgJOBS amnesty declared that the amnesty would be a done deal by the end of March. Thus, attaching the amnesty as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act is clearly a stealth effort to circumvent public opposition to the AgJOBS amnesty and force a vote on the amnesty bill.

Description:

H.R. 3142S. 1645, Agricultural Job Opportunity, Benefits, and Security Act of 2003

H.R. 3142 would create a guestworker program that leads to amnesty for certain agricultural workers. The potential recipients of the amnesty will be required to prove 100 days of agricultural employment in the 18-month period that ended Aug. 31, 2003. Then, prior to receiving amnesty, workers would have to show 360 days of additional farm work over the next six years.

================

AgJOBS Amnesty Bill Background: S. 1645, introduced by Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) is an agricultural guest worker-amnesty bill. Of the 1.2 million illegal aliens currently working in agriculture, an estimated 860,000, plus their spouses and children could qualify for this amnesty, so the total could reach three million or more.

June 9th, 2004: Senators Larry Craig (R-ID) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA) have put their AgJOBS amnesty, S. 1645, on a back-door, fast-track to becoming the eighth amnesty. Sen. Craig has filed the entire AgJOBS amnesty as an amendment, S. Amdt 3396, to the National Defense Authorization Act, S. 2400. As a result, I faxed both my Senators, urging them to vote no to...S. Amdt 3396.  The reason for their back-door tactics is because they couldn't get their bill to the floor for a vote, due to public opposition. Please read the June 8th entry for more information.

June 8th, 2004: I called both my Senators from Illinois (Dick Durbin (D) / Peter Fitzgerald (R)) and told them to withdraw their co-sponsorship of the AgJOBS Amnesty bill, S. 1645. Click on the link in red to find out if your Senators are co-sponsoring this bill. If they are, call them immediately and tell them to withdraw from the bill. Use the "Contact Lawmakers" box to the left to find your Senators phone numbers.

Mass Immigration Cost American Taxpayers $69 Billion Net and 2 Million Jobs in 1997

Study by Dr. Donald Huddle

Reports Legal Immigration of over 1 Million Per Year Accounts for over 62% of Costs
State Costs to Taxpayers are Also Soaring (1996 Net Costs % up from 1992):

California: $28 billion up 35%

New York: $14 billion up 29%

Texas: $7 billion up 37%

Florida: $6 billion up 77%

The first study of the net cost of immigration to American taxpayers in 1997 conducted by Dr. Donald Huddle, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Rice University, found that:

The nearly 26 million legal and illegal immigrants settling in the United States since 1970 cost taxpayers a net $69 billion in 1997 alone, in excess of taxes those immigrants paid. This represents a cost of $260 in additional taxes paid by each U.S. resident or $1,030 in additional taxes paid by each family of four. This cost is a substantial increase over the net immigration costs of $65 billion ins 1996, $51 billion ins 1994, $44 billion in 1993, and $43 billion in 1992.

Over 62% of the net national cost of immigration in 1996, $40.6 billion, was attributable to legal and legalized (amnesty) immigrants. Illegal immigration generates about 38%, $24 billion of the total net cost. Legal immigration levels are over one million per year, and rising.

During 1996, approximately 2.3 million predominantly low-skill American workers were displaced from their jobs due to the continued heavy influx of immigrant workers since 1970. Taxpayers paid more than $15.2 billion in public assistance for those displaced workers in 1996, including Medicaid, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), unemployment compensation, and food stamps.

A net deficit of $8.5 billion dollars to the Social Security system in 1996 is attributable to the economic impact of the foreign-born population. Continued mass immigration threatens the solvency of the Social Security system.

Net cumulative costs for the 1998-2007 decade are projected to reach $932 billion, an average of $93.2 billion per year, even with recent changes in welfare and immigration policies and a prosperous economy, if current mass immigration trends are allowed to continue.

Breakdown for 1997 Costs of Legal Immigration
Public Schools (Primary, Secondary, Higher, etc) $22.5 billion

Bilingual Education, ESOL, ESL Education $ 3.3 billion

Medicaid $12.8 billion

AFDC (for legal and illegal immigrant's offspring) $ 2.4 billion

Social Security $24.8 billion

Supplemental Security Income $ 2.9 billion

Housing Assistance $ 2.6 billion

Criminal Justice $ 2.6 billion

Jobs Lost by Americans $10.8 billion

Other Programs $51.4 billion

1997 Total Costs for LEGAL Immigration: $136 billion

Add 1997 total costs for illegal immigration of $41 billion and subtract an estimated $108 billion in taxes paid by all immigrants (legal and illegal) in 1997 to obtain the overall net figure of $69 billion charged to you, and other American taxpayers.

Other key facts regarding immigration are:

1.) If current immigration trends continue, the current U.S. population of

274 million will nearly double to over 500,000,000 by 2050. (The U.S. was 135 million at the end of WWII.)

2.) Harvard Professor George Borjas demonstrated that mass immigration costs American workers $133 billion per year in wage depression and job loss.

3.) The prestigious National Research Council found at the state and local levels (which bear most of the burden for K-12 education) the net fiscal burden of the average immigrant-headed household (i.e., after subtracting state and local taxes the household paid) was:

$1,484 per immigrant-headed household in New Jersey (in the 1989-1990 fiscal year); and $3,463 in California (in 1994-1995)(p. 276-277)

The Simpson 1986 amnesty bill had a similiar provision for ag workers. I hear over an additional 1 million got amnesty because of this. Who knows how many more immigrants this has translated into since they now can sponsor family members to enter the US.

You also need to know 62 senators are cosponsoring this bill, including my two Kansas Senators. I saw an article on the AgJobs bill the other day, and it indicated the illegals will not only receive amnesty, but also a Green Card. We paid over $1,000 alone for all the fees for my Russian wife, and that does not include all the incidentals. Giving a Green Card to these individuals is wrong, and is going to encourage more illegal immigration.

BUSH GET OUT YOUR VETO PEN.

That's not going to happen. The place to stop this disaster bill is in the House. If they go along with it I fear the Republicans will be voted out in November, and for a long time.

Gary, what can I say, when you're right, you're right...

I've been fighting this amnesty and illegal alien mess for years but it's like I am pissing in the wind!

My position is, until the Bush Administration starts enforcing the immigration laws in this country there is no "war on drugs", there is no "war on terrorism" and there definitely is no "homeland security!"

The GOP and especilaly Bush needs to get in touch with the base, not the WSJ, Limbuagh and Glen Beck crowd, but ther real man on the street base.

When it comes to amnesties and rewards for lawbreakers the democrats are infinitely worse. The only thing that has slowed the amnesty train has been the efforts of conservative patriots in the House, the Senate from either party there's little hope.

The house is a bit closer to the grass roots of the conservatives, and thankfully with Rep. Armey gone, much of the political power that would support amnesty is now gone.

BUSH GET OUT YOUR VETO PEN.NOWS THE TIME

You have got to be kidding, this is Bush's pet project, right after opening up the borders to unrestricted access by Mexican trucking. They better let these dogs lie until after the election. These issues will only alienate the base and do nothing to encourage the Hispanic voter to vote republican.

It would be so nice if he'd stand up to Vicente' and say he's tired of being the one always bent over the sofa.

I wish I were joking. Sorry for the crudity but the man doesn't leave much room for other interpretations.
