ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Perhaps visiting hours were over. Police shot and killed a full-grown black bear that wandered into a hospital Tuesday.
The 300-pound male bear wandered in front of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital at about 9:10 p.m. and activated a sensor that opens the hospital's doors, police said.
The bear wandered down a few hallways and into a computer room, said Lt. Karl Martin of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Two police officers yanked the door shut behind it.
Officers planned to sedate the bear, but because the hospital was nearly full they worried about it getting loose. An officer shot the bear twice and killed it, Martin said.

I think that would be "seriesly killed" by a "hugh-caliber rifle."

In related news, the Kerry campaign has blamed President Bush for the incident.
"It is because George Bush has not provided health care insurance to literally millions of carnivores that they are forced to paw their way into our hospitals. When I am President, there will be free veterinary coverage for all our fine, furry friends."

That is not fair!
I paid good money to sit in a flimsy tree stand in Quebec for HOURS while getting eaten by mosquitos and "noseeums" to shoot a 300 lb bear. Those cops cheated.
(I'm gonna move to Virginia!)

Once again, the right to arm bears is lacking.

I'm pretty sure the drywall and flimsy computer room door would have contained an enraged bear. Well Billy, we're sorry your sick Granny was killed by a bear. Since the safety of a bear is more important than the safety of our patients, I'm sure you understand why we had to wait a couple hours until the proper capture and release personnel were available. But in the meantime, the bear got frustrated that he could not get out of the drywalled room he was in and simply went berzerk. Oh well, here's a lollipop to help you thru your loss. But be happy, the bear is safe and sound in his new habitat.
Lighten up, Francis.
I don't give a rat's ass about the bear's safety or well-being. My point is that those flimsy hospital walls are filled with things that don't react well to bullets. Furthermore, the article says nothing about the bear being "enraged", going "berserk" or trying to break out of the room and kill someone's sick grandmother. He might've just been in there raiding the IT guy's pick-a-nick basket.
I'm delighted that the threat was removed with relative ease, and I'm also very happy that the police did not accidentally cause a far greater catastrophe.

When bears are killed tragically, do people put human dolls at impromptu shrines? Heh...seriesly doubtful in Rocky Mount, Virginia. There you're more likely to encounter impromptu shine.
