Republicans were dismayed to hear Ron Reagan, Jr., deliver what sounded like a rebuke to President Bush during a final tribute before his father was buried on Friday.
Referring to his dad as "a deeply, unabashedly religious man," the Reagan son added, "But he never made the mistake the fatal mistake of so many politicians - wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage. . . "
"He accepted [his faith] as a responsibility, not a mandate," noted the presidential son. "And there is a profound difference."
Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said there was no doubt the comments were a slap at Bush, but noted that Reagan Jr., "is somebody who's on the left more than on the right."
"He's never been in lockstep with his father or his father's legacy," Brinkley told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg.
In fact, Bush supporters should probably consider themselves lucky that Ron Jr. was able to keep his Bush-bashing under wraps for as long as he did.
Commenting on the president's nomination four years ago, a less restrained Ron Jr. asked sarcastically, "What's his accomplishment? That he's no longer an obnoxious drunk?"
A for President Reagan's religion, he was indeed unabashed when it came to his Christian faith. He was the first president in over a century who openly professed his faith in "Jesus Christ." He used almost every major public opportunity to invoke God, God's name or prayer.
One of his most famous speeches, where he called the Soviet Union an 'Evil Empire', was at a conference of Evangelical ministers.
That is one strange family portrait. What's with the seating arrangement? Everything about that picture screams "dysfunctional family."

My daughter was in ROTC for 4 years and my husband in the military for 7. They both say you ARE supposed to put your hand over your heart during the anthem.
Jr. Reagan is an ANTI-CHRISTIAN and a CHRISTIAN HATER.....Nancy Reagan did a HORRIBLE job at raising her kids....Jane Wyman did a MUCHO better job!

He was interviewed on one of the many shows that I saw last week. He said that he knew that his rejection of organized religion hurt his Dad and that his Dad never accepted that.

She's not married, she did have tubes tied and Michael and Maureen were brought up by their Mother, Jane Wyman. I have heard Michael honor her highly for it.
From what I heard on TV last week, Nancy was not as interested in Christianity as her husband was. Looks like the kids followed in her footsteps.

I knew immediately who Ron was talking about and was so sad that he chose that moment to do so, especially after President Bush had gone out of his way to be kind to his family. His Father would never have done such a thing, but as the article states, the son is a liberal, as is Patty.
I agree. Some of the quotes I've heard from Ron are really off the wall.

Tapatio, I never heard or read that quote before. I would like to see the rest of that speech; would you post the whole thing or a link to it? I can just see the libs reading that and protesting on the grounds of the "separation of church and state" invention. (I'd sure like to know who coined that phrase.)

Only service members in uniform are required to render a hand (or weapon) salute.
A civilian (or serviceman out of uniform) should always uncover and place hand over heart.
Veterans (in uniform) and the President may render either salute as they please.

Today at a press conference with Karzai, President Bush was asked his opinion on Ron Reagan's remarks by a reporterette. He said he hadn't heard them, but gave a general answer about being religious but following the law.
The reporterette framed it as "Republicans" think Ron Reagan was referring to GWB. That is wrong. It is "people" that think it. Several freepers knew it, but the only pundits I've heard directly or indirectly say it are Chris Matthews, Howard Fineman and Keith Olberman---all, not coincidentally, I'm sure---colleagues with Reagan at MSNBC. Now we add Doug Brinkley to the mix. So, the only people with a public platform to discuss it on tv are NOT Republicans. I think most people with knowledge of Ron Reagan's recent (NewsMax seems unaware of his recent MSNBC punditry stints during the dem primaries where he bashed Bush with abandon) figured it out right away and it is not right or fair to say it is Republicans thinking the worst.
Because we're hip to what the libs are saying, and what they've been saying for about a month is that Dubya is a religious zealot who thinks he's on a divine mission in the war on terror. There is zero question in my mind that is what Ron Reagan was saying. I also think he'll spell it out eventually so everyone "gets it".
