Ron Reagan, Jr.: Bush-Hater?
NewsMax.com ^ | 15 June 2004 | Staff Report

Republicans were dismayed to hear Ron Reagan, Jr., deliver what sounded like a rebuke to President Bush during a final tribute before his father was buried on Friday.

Referring to his dad as "a deeply, unabashedly religious man," the Reagan son added, "But he never made the mistake the fatal mistake of so many politicians - wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage. . . "

"He accepted [his faith] as a responsibility, not a mandate," noted the presidential son. "And there is a profound difference."

Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said there was no doubt the comments were a slap at Bush, but noted that Reagan Jr., "is somebody who's on the left more than on the right."

"He's never been in lockstep with his father or his father's legacy," Brinkley told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg.

In fact, Bush supporters should probably consider themselves lucky that Ron Jr. was able to keep his Bush-bashing under wraps for as long as he did.

Commenting on the president's nomination four years ago, a less restrained Ron Jr. asked sarcastically, "What's his accomplishment? That he's no longer an obnoxious drunk?"

A for President Reagan's religion, he was indeed unabashed when it came to his Christian faith. He was the first president in over a century who openly professed his faith in "Jesus Christ." He used almost every major public opportunity to invoke God, God's name or prayer.

One of his most famous speeches, where he called the Soviet Union an 'Evil Empire', was at a conference of Evangelical ministers.

Why doesn't anyone think it was a jab at Kerry? After all. Kerry is well known for making every church appearance a photo op. I think Kerry has USED his religion to the point of blasphemy. This could well have been a jap at him.

Michael is and always will be one word: CLASS. He is Aces in my book and Ron's bio kids wish they had the pull and class that Michael has.

You are technically correct. But going all the way back to 1981 I've heard him referred to as "Ron Jr."

Old habits die hard.

I noted on another thread that you don't need a degree in psychology to figure this one out. Two Presidential sons...namesakes in fact. Last time I saw Ron Reagan, Jr. he was hosting the Westminster Dog Show. Last time I saw Bush he was giving the State of the Union Adress. Go figure it out.

And here's something else I speculate. In 1980 when Reagan took office how old was Ronald Reagan, Jr.? I'm sure there were times at various functions when the Reagan children and the Bush children were in attendance. And the Bush boys...handsome, athletic, MACHO...and then there was Ronald Reagan, Jr. A ballet dancer. How much you wanna bet the Bush boys got the attention from Ronald Reagan, Sr. I'd put money on it.

I heard somewhere that she got her tubes tied because her mother was such a crappy mother.

She must be a lib with such tortured logic as that.

I don't know if she's married but Michael Reagan seems to be head and shoulders above Nancy's children.

Ron is a creep, IMO. I happened to also notice that he never bowed his head during the various prayers. He just held his head up with a smug sort of look. He irritated the heck out of me.

"Why doesn't anyone think it was a jab at Kerry?"

Because of Ron's well doccumented hatred for W. It's naieve to think it was a swipe at Clintoon or F'n.

Communicating his faith to his children and them being too self absorbed to get it are separate issues. They could not have not seen or experienced their father's Faith.

Patti was married once and she shacked up with an Eagle in the 70's.

Sad to say, but if he pulled that stunt for the DNC, I wouldn't be surprised in the least. His contempt for what his father stood for is more than evident in his perverse words and actions.

Ronald Reagan, Ron, Nancy Reagan and Patti Davis, circa 1967. Inset, Ron Reagan today. The Bush inner circle would like to think of George W.'s presidency as more of an extension of Ronald Reagan's than of his one-term father's. Reagan himself, who has long suffered from Alzheimer's disease, is unable to comment on those who lay claim to his political legacy. But his son, Ron, is -- and he's not pleased with the association. "The Bush people have no right to speak for my father, particularly because of the position he's in now," he said during a recent interview with Salon. "Yes, some of the current policies are an extension of the '80s. But the overall thrust of this administration is not my father's -- these people are overly reaching, overly aggressive, overly secretive, and just plain corrupt. I don't trust these people." - - - - - - - - - - - -

"Eternity may record him as a failure because he did not 'communicate' his faith to his children."

Well, Jesus said to preach the faith, and if you enter a house having people who don't want to hear the truth, shake the dust from your sandals and go to the next.

Liberalism and psycho-babble always finds ways to fault the wrong people. Ron Jr. and Patti are wrong. President Reagan was not. The terrorists were wrong on 9/11. America was not. We can't buy into this stuff.
