Beirut, Lebanon, Jun. 15 (UPI) -- Iran reportedly is readying troops to move into Iraq if U.S. troops pull out, leaving a security vacuum.
The Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, monitored in Beirut, reports Iran has massed four battalions at the border.

Could you, or someone, explain the whole brigade, platoon, division thing to me? How many men in each etc.
Id be overjoyed. Probably be the only chance we have of politically justifying kicking out the second leg of the axis.
"Firstly, the troops are not going anywhere and secondly, whatever we think of the mullahs, youm must be able to understand why they would want to secure their border against an ungoverned nation".
My sentiments exactly.
Could this be one of the reasons all of our aircraft carriers are depoloyed (with full battle groups)?
We can't do anything if they stay on their side of the border.
i also don't believe that the nkorean soldier cares as much for the The Magnificent Leader's Paradise as much as the Magnificent Leasder does, especially when their own family members and countrymen are eating tree bark for breakfast
They also have been taunting, bullying, and threatening crap for the past couple weeks. This is no different. Just BS.
How many soldiers in an Iranian Division and then in their brigades?
Do you know in what part of Iran the nuclear reactor is located?
You've nailed exactly why the nay sayers here are undermining our foreign policy and ultimately jeopardizing us at home.
They do not have AIR POWER!
I respectfully beg to differ. It is ironic given yor screen name that you should make that statement since they have apparently updated their F14s and more importantly, are producing their own version of the Phoenix missile.
Iran has a considerable indigeonous aerospace industry evidently well able to keep their planes flourishing.
Stupid Iranians.
Exactly!! 4 battalions is not really MASSING. Especially not from our perspective on a modern battlefield.
We would only need about 4 hours to render then battlefield 'ineffective', and about 24 to fully 'attrit' them.
Target selection complete.....
If you actually believe that tripe, then you're a victim of the TV news people. The Iranians have spent over $1 billion in the last year to destabilize Iraq. They support al Qaeda in every way. The last thing on earth they are doing is "securing" their border with Iraq.
4 battalions (roughly 2800 soldiers) would be a good sized force for assisting their agents in cross border operations, but not much more. Given the local terrain, they are nothing more than Specter bait.
Or 1500 miles.
What will the world say when Iran invades Iraq? Will there major protests?
They'll say that we provoked it.
They have already lost power!
If you are talking about the country of Iraq as being occupied by coalition forces, why does Iran suddenly have this need after more than a year to beef up defense of their border? (If this is actually what they are doing.) Secondly, if you are referring to the new Iraqi interim government in leading an "ungoverned nation", how do they present a threat to Iran?
Lastly, Iran feeling threatened isn't necessarily a bad state for them to be in IMO.
Prairie
I think you've probably hit the nail on the head. Still, it would not surprise me to find out that these four battalions were also charged with setting up a staging base, in case the military situation began to look hopeful for an invasion.
