Firstly, the troops are not going anywhere and secondly, whatever we think of the mullahs, you must be able to understand why they would want to secure their border against an ungoverned nation. I think you've probably hit the nail on the head. Still, it would not surprise me to find out that these four battalions were also charged with setting up a staging base, in case the military situation began to look hopeful for an invasion.

Given that Iran & N.Korea are in bed together, the fact that N. Korea wants S. Korea, US policy is (until lately) to pacify and use words instead of bullets or bombs and that Iran & N.Korea probably get most of their intel from CNN which is anti-war and reports that most of America wants out of Iraq as well, I think that it is a planned distraction orchestrated to get more US troops OUT of S.Korea, thus opening the border to a N.Korean invasion. It helps Iran by showing the other Islamo-wackos that Iran is not afraid of the US and as payment N.Korea helps Iran in their WMD programs. It helps JKerry and the Dems by re-energizing the 'peace' movement if GWB makes any show of force.
For the dark ones it is a win-win situation. That's my .02.
