Jerusalem - The Jewish Agency is bracing itself for the immigration of tens of thousands French Jews into Israel as a result of a growing anti-Semitism in France, a spokesperson for the organisation said on Sunday.

Senior government officials including Immigration Absorption Minister Tzippi Livni, cabinet director Ilan Cohen and the president of the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency, Sallai Meridor, met last week "to work out how to come to the help of potential Jewish immigrants from France", Yaden Vatikai told AFP.

Vatikai said that a report compiled by the agency had found 30 000 out of France's 575 000-strong Jewish community were considering immigrating to Israel.

"We are multiplying our efforts to encourage in this case, particularly with an information campaign," he said.

Jews living in France say that they are victims of a growing tide of anti-Semitic crime.

French Justice Minister Dominique Perben said last week that 180 anti-Jewish acts had been recorded so far this year, including cases of assault, arson and verbal insults.

His ministry said no comparison was available with previous years because this was the first time that anti-Jewish acts were being recorded in such detail.

Vatikai said the situation for French Jews was becoming increasingly "difficult".

If France is so anti-semitic, why are there 575,000 Jews there now, when there were barely 70,000 around 1930? Seems it must be a fairly good country for them to receive so many immigrant Jews.

Don't kid yourself. SNL may have more than a few Jews on its payroll, but they're just as anti-Semitic as the rest of the entertainment industry/news media. I don't know what it is about the leftist Jewish population in this country. Is anyone surprised by this? I remember a college professor - and this was in the early 1970's - telling us of a refrain that was popular in France during the mid 1930's. The statement was: "Better Hitler than Leon Blum." The statement is, of course, an example of crude anti-

France has done everything it could to undermine the policies of the United States since the end of World War II; and for those enamored by France's assistance to the colonies during the Revolution: remember, French King aided the colonies because he thought it would weakened the British, not from any desire to help us.

I have a number of French expatriate Jewish friends. The French Jews are not only leaving, but the ones I have spoken to have some very strong feelings about the Arab-muslim population here in America. They are indeed leaving France.

Count me as a supporter of Israel, but NOT a blind supporter. That should be recipricol. We provide them with $4 billion a year in direct aid, plus close to $10 billion in loan guarantees last year (very low interest)... We get a democratic ally in the mid-east, a counter-balance to the Arabs, who are worth little more to us than warm spit.

Opening the flood-gates for thousands of French Jews would circumvent the immigration process, and that's just WRONG. I think we should minimize the number of ALL immigrants entering the country, not minimize but increase for certain groups.

I'm just as baffled, and I live in NYC. Why are the majority of them so liberal? Why do they seek to destroy our President via the NY Times, and other liberal rags... I would have thought that with the conservatives' strong support of Israel, and the strong family values, that there would be more Jewish folks supporting the GOP. I just don't get it.
