Clinton's Memoir Ushers In Different Wave of Nostalgia

By John F. Harris Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, June 13, 2004; Page A01

Now, it's the Democrats' turn. After a week-long flood of commentary on the most popular Republican president of modern times, the country is about to be immersed in another tide of reminiscence and argument about the most successful Democratic president within the memory of most voters.

A month anchored at the beginning by Ronald Reagan will be anchored at the end by Bill Clinton. The release of Clinton's memoirs, "My Life," on June 22 will put a spotlight on a presidency that in policies and style was wholly different from Reagan's. Like Reagan, however, Clinton as ex-president has seen the controversies of his tenure recede while appreciation for his outsized personality has seemed to deepen. And like Reagan, Clinton is now widely regarded as a touchstone for his party, including for the presumptive presidential nominee, John F. Kerry.

The phrase "like Clinton" is invoked by Kerry's team and other Democrats as a shorthand for certain ideas about how to win the White House and how to govern. When he was in office, Clinton was hailed as a master of tactical improvisation -- constantly tacking back and forth to meet the needs of the moment -- but faced doubts that he stood for something larger than political survival. Now, at least among Democrats, there is new consensus on what it means to be "like Clinton" -- a record that the very different policies of President Bush have placed in vivid contrast.

Reagan's legacy;

1) Defeating Communism
2) Ending stagflation
3) Bringing hope back to America

Clinton's legacy;

1) Getting away with sexual harrassment and probably rape
2) Getting away with taking bribes from China
3) Creating a barrier between law enforcement and national security leading directly to the intelligence failures of 9/11.

Them's the facts.

Ah, a fluff article on President Clinton that couldn't manage to name a single specific policy that Clinton was able to enact of his own accord in his 8 long years in Office.

Hilarious, even more so because the lib(s) who wrote the article won't even comprehend the humor.

The barrier, *created* by a Democrat legislature in answer to Nixon. (Nixon wasn't as good at it as Johnson or Kennedy) The barrier was there long before Clinton, but by executive fiat his administration made it higher.

Clinton came into office with no core beliefs, no real agenda, except Socialism, no ideas just his ability to get elected President. He lived large off all the groundwork laid by Reagan for the economy. He co opted all of the Republican ideas just to get reelected and did nothing substantive in his 2nd term.
What would this idiot have done if truly faced with problems like a tanking economy, war or any of a number of other real problems to solve and having no idea how.
He lucked out. It was an always will be about the Clinton's and nothing else.

Sorry, your history is incomplete...

4) First Presidential masturbator in the Oval Office.

5) First President to betray national security through wholesale espionage of our nation's nuclear secrets.

6) First President to rip-off the White House and Air Force One for personal gain of furnishings and keepsake memorabilia.

7) 'For Sale' Presidency continued all the way up until the last days of his criminal Presidency.

"If you believe the world is interdependent and you cannot kill, occupy or imprison all your actual or potential adversaries, sooner or later you have to make a deal," he said. "

What type deal can you make with Islamofacists who are on a holy jihad to kill or convert all infidels? How can you compromise with people who want to kill us simply because of what we are, not what we do?

Perhaps Clinton would offer to let them kill 50% of the American people.

Idiot.

In 10 or 20 years when Clinton dies, I doubt anyone will even go to his funeral.

The phrase "like Clinton" is invoked by Kerry's team and other Democrats as a shorthand for certain ideas about how to...

Speaking of phrases, the following will be stressed and taught:

"My, that's a lovely clean blue dress you have on"

"Is that sink taken?"

"Don't worry -- the cigar isn't lit"

Oh please! The last week was an outpouring of love and sympathy from millions of Americans. This article features some memories of a few Washington insiders.
In many ways, presidents are made great by the times they live in. Would Lincoln be regarded as one of our greatest presidents if not for the Civil War. Reagan became president in a world embroiled in a decades old Cold War and an economy mired in recession and overcame both. Clinton inherited a peaceful world and a recovering economy.
Americans and history recognise adversity and respect those who overcome it. President Reagan's goals as president were to defeat communism and restore the American economy and pride. President Clinton's goal was to be popular (remember the talk of being in permanent campaign mode). President Reagan will be remembered in history as a great leader of his times. President Clinton will be remembered, at best, as a placeholder.
