President Reagan's death brought to the fore his outstanding accomplishment of ending the Cold War. Like American presidents before him he led the U.S. in the charge against the "evil empire" by forging alliances and sending troops to remote theaters at high cost in blood and treasury. What makes Reagan's vision for victory particularly remarkable is that it stemmed from the belief in the power of technology as both a force multiplier and a game changer.
For the three and a half decades that preceded Reagan's presidency, Americans lived in the ominous shadow of a thermonuclear war that threatened to bring destruction to the planet. Two years into his first term, Reagan invited some of America's leading scientists to "give us the means of rendering these nuclear weapons impotent and obsolete." The result was a radical decision to develop a new system, which became known as "Star Wars," to reduce the threat of nuclear missiles by destroying them from space. The decision was met with a mixture skepticism and ridicule. Critics pointed to the technological barriers and the huge costs involved. But Reagan did not falter and insisted on pursuing the project. His gambit worked. The Soviets, already burdened by poor economy, proposed to eliminate all nuclear weapons over 15 years, contingent on the U.S backing off the project. Reagan declined and within a year the two superpowers began negotiations toward nuclear disarmament and permanent peace.
Thus ended the Cold War.

WWRD? I would like to think he would go against all of those who know better, especially in the State Dept, and tell the truth about Islam as it is practiced by far too many and tolerated by virtually all. Call it what it is, a culture and ideology of hate and evil. Then proceed to confront it encouraging all who wish to see reform among the Islamic religion. Encourage them with words backed up by credible threat and actions to make it more desirable to reform than die. Give them a simple choice to make. And those who really believe that to die for radical Islam is to please God, be the instrument by which their goals and desires are realized. Simple, to the point, and easily recognizable as the only real solution---the Reagan way.
Yeah what happen why didnt' Ronnie didn't get US air force make Beirut into parking lot
Or had Israel do it
That suck part about it
I still don't know why Ronnie didn't make Teamster action out of Beirut
You are right on all points, which is why we have huge problems still here at home and no end in sight for these.
Muslims are busy making inroads into American life all around us, and few are noticing the danger. I read an article weeks ago that quoted a former Muslim as saying that Americans are sleeping if they think the Muslims are here in the USA for the American dream. He says many are just waiting for the right moment to cause major trouble here.
It will take strong prayers to keep these "embedded" terrorists from rising up here in the U.S.
If another attack occurs...people will scream that Bush didnt do enough...I will agree with them. There is so much we havent been doing.
The search for a source to replace oil has been researched for decades...The problem is finding one as cheap or efficient.
If we reduced our dependence on ME oil it would not deprive the ME of income...there are many countries who would still be buying it...It would be cheaper, thus helping the economy of other countries.
The article is far from an original idea...We will get truly serious about energy other than oil when the oil is not available...and we, the consumer, are forced to accept the added cost.
True, but there's no news here...
Is ANWR an answer? And while we ALL realize oil revenue has been feeding the Muslim Monster, just when will we see a DoE initiative to develop alternative fuel sources?
Many believe several systems of AFS have already been developed in years past, but Big Oil has bought out the patents for obvious reasons.
"......and since we're in a National emergency, I hereby declare all State-side enemy combatants be confined for the duration. Mr. Kerry, we'll have to ask you to pack, you're going to Gitmo. Don't worry though, you'll finally encounter people who really know what you're about."
1)I do not think he'd be calling Islam a "religion of peace."
2)Mr. Reagan who say the heck with ALL PC, let's do what's right for Americans, even if that would mean angering the world.
3) He'd kick the media out of Iraq, break off relations with France & would help our Southern border patrol more
If you think terrorism is bad now it will be ten times worse when we cut off their oil sales.
Mr. Sinkspur, you have it in a nutshell.
The article is empty and puerile; it might deserve a Tenth Grade "C" based on minimal mis-spellings.
I'd add a couple observations to your remark that if it were possible supply our energy sources from domestic sources in a cost-effective way, we would have done so.
I think we would have done so even if it weren't particularly cost-effective.
The reason we haven't is that the costs would not be marginally higher, they would be totally utterly prohibitive, to the point that the subsidies needed to keep the effort alive would quickly banckrupt us. Further, the law enforcement efforts needed to keep out black- market oil would be politically unsustainable.
We would create a situation where we would utterly lack the resources to fight these militant Islamofacists on their ground, but we would soon be unable to mount a fight on our own territory.
Just a guess, but wouldn't he move US toward energy self-sufficiency so we wouldn't be open for Arab blackmail, then pound the devil out of the terrorists and their supporters?
Reagan bailed out of Beirut when 200 some Marines were anihilated. Think about it.
Reagan was one of the greatest Presidents and most decent Christian men who ever lived.
That's why he could never end the Islamist menace.
The Communists, despite their flawed politics were basically rational individuals who were unwilling to kill themselves in order to achieve a goal.
The Islamists are not. They are the lowest of the low, the vilest of the vile, and the most treacherous, insidous enemy western civlization has ever faced.
To see how to destroy Islamofacism, we shoould look to Genghis Khan, not Reagan.
Reason and common sense will never prevail with these people. They are deviod of either quality.
Only ruthless, relenting, unmerciful terror and absolute eradication of these brigands, their culture, monuments and families will succeed.
This is a war to the death - ours or theirs.
And if THAT happens -- while assuming we have no further need for ME oil -- then the entire Middle East will finally be turned into glass...Thereby exterminating 99% of the Muslim radicals.
Sorry, I don't believe in genocide and it's not necessary anyways. If the house of Saud should go down the whole middle east will implode on itself.
Do you believe in self-defense?
Soon we won't have a choice.
It's Arab leadership that is the problem.
