ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A college disc jockey who was initially fired after devoting a radio show to celebrating the death of Ronald Reagan will be reassigned to another job until he can respond to complaints about his actions, officials said Friday.
Scott Hornyak, a 28-year-old undergraduate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, was told Friday that he was fired from his paid position as business manager at KSUA-FM, a student-run station.
A university spokeswoman later said the firing was premature and the decision was rescinded until Hornyak had a chance to respond to complaints about the Sunday show.
"The university process wasn't followed properly," Debra Damron said. She said Hornyak will be temporarily reassigned to another job.
Hornyak had earlier been suspended indefinitely from his other job as disc jockey. He said Friday night he will appeal any reassignment or termination.
"They're firing me because of what I said, and the public's reaction to what I said," said Hornyak, who goes by the call name "Spider Bui."
H.B. Telling, the station's general manager, said he could not comment on whether Hornyak was fired because of the broadcast. The university has a policy against discussing personnel issues.
No tape of the show was available. But according to Hornyak, he berated Reagan, who died June 5, for his foreign policy in Latin America, Iraq and Afghanistan, and for his response to the AIDS epidemic.
Hornyak said the show was "a celebration that Ronald Reagan was dead, was finally dead," and that he told listeners he wanted to "walk over the newly laid dirt" on Reagan's grave.
Telling said the station received numerous complaints about the show.
Telling said Hornyak was suspended as a disc jockey solely because of his failure to obey the station's rules, not because of the inflammatory content of the show.
He said Hornyak did not fill out a log of the songs he played on air and did not play the station's standard disclaimers announcing that his views did not represent those of the station or the university.
Hornyak said he did not fill out the logs due to absent-mindedness and that he did not play the disclaimer because he was busy taking song requests.
KSUA, like the campus newspaper, is supported by student activity fees and allocated by the campus student government. It is considered independent, Damron said.
"Let us not judge all undergrads by their age. "
Well, yes, you are right. And if I ever went back to school I'd be a 45+ (ack and double ack!) undergrad myself.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Oh, and BTW, looking at the station's website, they are a Pacifica affiliate, so there are more moonbats than not up there (at least at that radio station).
"Ten years of college down the drain!"
yep, like this one:
It needs to be repeated again

This extreme hatred of President Reagan quite often comes from the aids infected homosexuals of America.
They blame President Reagan for what they have done to themselves.
Back home we'd say that Hornyak is a hawnyawk. He's practiced that sneer a time or two....

I'm that rarity of rarities, a conservative college professor, and I work in a department full of conservative college professors. We're much more common in disciplines like Business, Engineering, Medicine, and Computer Science (Notice what these fields have in common?), in regional and church-affiliated universities, and in regions that are conservative (e.g., the South). This isn't to say that the horror stories you've heard aren't true, just that there are exceptions.
I know, I know: It's 99% of academics that give the other 1% a bad name. It's early. I need caffeine.

Ha, what a tough guy!
LOL!
I wonder if there would be the same chance to "respond" if he had made the same comment about clintbilly, or cartbilly?
Check this idiot out!GRRR!
You can say that again. See post #22.

Hah! Missed that on the first scan of the article... thanks for highlighting it.
"Ten years of college... down the drain!"
I joined the Corps in 1985 and am just old enough :) to remember the mess President Reagan pulled this nation out of. I know of the fear of the Soviet Union and understood the evil that it was. I understand why I so loved and admired President Reagan.
But what does this warriors soul good is the fact that Marines that were just babies when President Reagan took office hold him in just as high esteem.
I never realized it until the Presidents passing. Then I saw in the words, and eyes of men younger than me, a sense of awe, respect and admiration reserved for only the finest of men. President Reagan had the ability to reach across time and touch the souls of men who never met him. (I must clarify, men, not little boys like the cretin in this article).
What I find most disturbing is not the vile hatred of Reagan. Good and might are always hated by evil and weakness, but rather the inability of the left to just be civil during this most trying time for the Reagan family and the nation as a whole.
Although I will never be choked up at the passing of President Clinton, I will respect the family and keep my tongue in check. I did not curse Ron Brown at his death, I did not curse Paul Wellstone at his death, I did not curse Tip O'Neal at his death. I am just foolish naïve, I suppose, to expect the same from the left.
I thought it was fitting that Reagan was laid to final rest at sunset. After all, he already led this nation through its brightest day.
Sorry, I got a little verbose.
28 and still an undergrad...need I say more?
What is this country coming to? He should be expelled. Whether you like someone or not is immaterial...you never say that it is good that someone should die (with the exception of Hitler and mass murdering terrorists...neither which Reagan fits). What this DJ did was nothing short of appalling!
I've seen a million punks who look exactly the same...they act tough until you call them on it. Than with the loudest amount of bluster they give a reason why they can't fight you and typically head the other way at great haste.
Please explain the error to him by hand...
Yup.
That's been my experience. Even when there's a dozen of them and one of you.
Just this last Tuesday on the way to the Bio2004 conference:
After moving less than half a block in 20 minutes (one block away from from Moscone), a bunch of bicyclists started riding between the cars, leader with a bull horn, shouting something about taking over the streets.
He had the horn pointed back wards so I didn't hear him coming. Durn! he got away!
However, I popped my door open in front of the third or so cyclist in the string. (I did look first to make sure he had room to stop).
He screams "You effin' clymer!!!" (OK, I cleaned it up a little, so sue me...)
I looked up smiled sweetly and said "That makes two of us..."
Totally messed them up. They had to stop and regroup. His buds split leaving him with two young "ladies" to protect him from the mean man in the car. Boo fricking hoo
I closed the door and he started to pass by and continued to berate me. When he was adjacent to the door I popped it open at him, not to hit him, but to persuade him to move along.
He darn near fell off his bike trying to dodge me.
"We're going to call 911!!!"
"Don't bother, I'll call for you" which I did. (The line was busy)
He and the two chicks decided that it was past their collective bedtimes or something and split.
Felt GOOD...
