Yours is an interesting assessment, and for the most part I agree with it. However, I fear you are somewhat optimistic concerning the softening of relations between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Arafat has seen to it that the future generations of Palestinians will continue the violence.

Their version of "Sesame Street" has children marching and singing while wearing the stylish pretend bomb vests. It's really quite amazing when you see it and watch the eight year olds talk of the "Zionists" as some lower life form, and wanting only in life the opportunity to rid the land of them.

The Palestinians are in it for the long haul.

its the revolutionary styled extremists that are in charge and theres not much room for free speech or dissent in palestine. i do honestly believe that a sizeable portion (though what size exactly is debateable) of the palestinian population dont care as much for the 'extras' as much as they want to see israeli tanks out of their streets, and they want to travel to work without roadblocks and having guns pointed at them.

make no mistake, whatever the justifications, whatever you can say about israelis safety, its not very safe being a palestinian - if you take away that 'occupation' element, then you are removing part of the source of the extremists power. those who just want to work and take care of their families will have their needs met. those who have more extreme desires will find themselves more out of step with a part of the populace, who no longer feel threatened, controlled or occupied.

see, i dont think the majority of the populace is 'naturally' extremist. but while the environment is hostile, the extremists are more their allies and protectors than ever. the extremists use the percieved injustice of israeli control to ensure support from the populace.

yes they may still hate jews and americans, but given autonomy and the basic concessions of removing the settlements, the extremists hold on the populace will weaken. how much, im not sure. is it enough? i dont know that either. i think israel should keep the spoils of its war, though. thats fair.

you know, its a shame arafat couldnt make that final step at those last peace talks before the infitada. if he had we would all be looking at him in a different light... its his great failure, missing the opportunity to give peace to his people and israels. the idiot.

Yer right about the brainwashing, but I do sincerely believe that HATRED can be overcome by allowing the parties to intermingle over time. While it's worse than the schism between blacks and whites in the 60's, there's a lesson to be learned from those battles over Civil Rights. Increasingly, I expect to see outrage and scorn heaped upon State-sponsored HATE JEWS education throughout the Islamic World...eventually, the Fear and Loathing will subside.

you can argue the rights and wrongs all day and all night but these people are born into the situation. you take away the fear and the danger and suddenly their extremist leaders arent needed to 'save' them from any 'great satans' or 'evil zionists'.

theres nothing better to unite a populace and inspire acts of sacrifice and desperation than a great enemy and percieved injustice. while israel occupies, this is easily 'proven' by the palestinian leaderships propaganda. remove much of he 'injustice' and whats left to complain about?

it is a great catch 22 situation and bears lesons we need to consider in our own war on terrorism: every action needs to be considered not only for its purely short term and military value, but also in how it allows the enemy to gather its strength and paint us to its people. what do we do if they are goading us into acts which benefit them in the end?

i wish this were a simpler world and we know exactly who our enemies are and we could go fight them, but they hide and plot and scheme. damn them.

Well, we're still waiting to see the extent of the injury before we take any action. So far, they've been very unhelpful to us. They won't cover my wife going to see a doctor, and made it known that if we put it on our insurance, we could be liable for the costs when it comes time to settle. I have a good attorney though, so I'm not too worried about it.

My father in law is doing OK -- understandably, still a little weak, but he's promised to cut the pork chops and Ding-Dongs out of his diet, so there's progress. =)

BTW, here's a quote I liked from the new Clinton book -- I'm sure you'll enjoy it too. =P

Yeah, what you said. Especially the part about Arafat being an idiot. Clinton's final offer to him in 2001 was more than he deserved, and the best deal he was going to get. Now he's got a much more hard-line Israeli PM in Ariel Sharon, and much less credibility in the eyes of the UN and the world.

I don't favor the Israelis or the Palestinians in this conflict anymore. The whole situation is just too complex. Every time I think I understand one side's point of view, there's another layer to the onion to consider. It's too much to expect both sides to agree, it's too much to expect both sides to compromise what they'll need to compromise, and it's too much to expect them to forget about. But I hope we get a president who actually shows an interest in negotiating with them soon and starting this peace process again. It's not safe being an Israeli or a Palestinian, and the world won't be safe until they're safe.
