"TrailBlazer!!"
By Chris Davis

On November 6, 2000, President George Bush was elected President of the United States. Despite the liberal challenges through recount after recount after recount, George W. Bush still won the election. Regardless of the liberal slander and court challenges, George W. Bush still won the election. It was his destiny, his America. His chance to change the course of the U.S. Military, the course of the American spirit, revive a sluggish economy, and a chance to bring pride back to the White House.

After eight years of debauchery in the Oval Office, President Bush was sworn in on January 20, 2001. His faith in God and respect for the American people would give him the ability to withstand those awful days of transition to the White House. While liberals ranted and raved about his illegitimacy, Bush boldly cast his vision for America. He stood with pride at the podium and gave Americans a vision of optimism for times ahead. He spoke of duty and civility-something lacking during the Clinton administration. In his address, President Bush stated, “We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another. Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.”

Ironically, his code name is “Trailblazer.” A name fit for a man who would be trailblazing in the twenty-first century. President Bush’s first trail led him to his faith in God when announcing his faith-based initiative for childcare. This was an unprecedented move causing the liberals to react by quoting the separation of church and state. Until George W. Bush came along, the word, God, hadn’t been used in the Oval Office since President George H.W. Bush’s tenure. George W. Bush’s belief in the Almighty had given him the courage to open a path and transcend above the politically correct times from the Clinton regime.

Liberals, much like the Nazis, removed religion from people’s lives. Their belief is that the federal government will solve your problems for you, essentially leaving that to man. During my years of enlistment between 1996-1999, any reference to God was often discouraged in the U.S. Army. It was a known fact that a soldier didn’t talk about religion or politics while serving in the U.S. Military. This was the morale lowering effect that pushed me out of the service. It was liberalism at its finest hour, driving thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coasties out of the U.S. Armed Forces. Faith in God and faith in America are closely bound together. It is the driving force of these personnel that they perform their duty for their country, their God, and their loved ones. If these men and women don’t have something to believe in, then they won’t put themselves in harm’s way for the greater good of liberty. President Bush inspires those personnel serving in our Armed Forces. By stomping a footpath for God, he has made it a household word again, and restored the faith in the U.S. Military. In restoring that faith, he has made a better America.

On September 11, 2001, President George Bush would find himself blazing yet another trail. This road would test his courage, strength, and integrity. With the death of nearly three thousand Americans, he would have to wage war on terrorism, a war that would take him to several different countries to fight. President Bush would need the support of America as he sent their sons and daughters off to war. In his address to the nation, he stated, “The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.”

This statement was the beginning of the rally to gain support of Americans, giving those terrorists that would harm us a Texas style brand of justice. With a united America, he sent troops to Afghanistan, crushing the Taliban, splintering Al-Qaeda, and liberating a country badly in need of change. His actions almost prompted my return to the U.S. Army. His conviction, passion, and dedication to the War on Terror have given the U.S. Armed Forces a purpose not found since President Reagan’s era. President Bush’s drive to eradicate terrorists has taken the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines into countries to liberate them from oppression. It is that duty that has cemented their faith in George W. Bush. And it is Bush’s faith in God that has given him the ability to make those tough decisions sending the men and women of the Armed Forces into conflicts with terrorism. These men and women gladly volunteer to free these countries and make America safer. For it is their belief in their Commander-in-Chief, that they exercise their duties with honor and distinction.

Bush resurrected the faith of the U.S. Military in the President of the United States. His unswerving devotion to America, Americans, and all that is stands for, gives the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guard pride in performing their tasks. Their pride in America is back and their dedication to Her has become paramount again. Ronald Reagan spurred this kind of patriotic duty of its military and citizens. Much like Reagan, President Bush has accomplished this in the twenty-first century, despite the constant disparaging remarks of the partisan media. President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “The first requisite of a citizen in this republic of ours is that he should be able and willing to pull his weight.”

Those words bring home the first four years of President George W. Bush’s service to his country. Not only does he inspire the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coasties, but inspires the American citizen. He motivates them to volunteer to support this great republic, to do their part in a young country. From senior citizens to teenagers, he encourages Americans to pull their weight in the War on Terror, the economy, supporting the troops, and renewing their patriotism, which seemed to lose its way during the Clinton administration.

The Clinton administration taught us not to take responsibility and not to take action. He taught young people that promiscuous sex is all right and cheating on your wife is normal, as if somehow we had regressed to the 1960’s. He lowered the morale of the men and women of the U.S. Military through the “Don’t ask, don’t tell policy.” He damaged America’s reputation in Somalia and destroyed the respect for the office of the presidency, almost taxing us into oblivion. He allowed Osama Bin Laden to build power. He allowed Saddam Hussein the time to hide and remove his weapons of mass destruction. President Clinton did more to harm this country than thirty years of terrorism attacks on American citizens. These attacks began increasing with the first attack in 1993 on his watch. He made America appear weak and helpless, giving the impression that we won’t do anything no matter what you do to us. And by ignoring the terrorists, he aided their growth, organization, and confidence. Clinton was, by his actions, one of the worst presidents in American history. So, when President Bush took office in January of 2001, he had to become a trailblazer. He had to focus a country losing its way. He had to lower taxes, traveling a path not taken since 1981. He had to mend the broken morale of the troops, Americans, and it’s reputation across the globe. He had no other choice but to clean up the messes left by Clinton and his liberal administration.

George W. Bush has become the most important man in the twenty-first century. His actions in the War on Terror have spread more liberty than any treaty throughout our short history. He has proven the United Nations a criminal and useless organization, an organization allowing genocide to occur in Somalia and for a dictatorship to thrive in Iraq. President Bush, through his actions, can advance the cause of conservatism and become one of the greatest presidents in this century. He has become the “Trailblazer” his nickname so aptly indicates.

Good stuff, writer33...MUD

"Reagan’s Freedom Revolution"
Dick Armey looks at the impact of Ronald Reagan on American politics.

This piece is adapted from a speech delivered on December 9, 2003 at the Reagan Presidential Library by Dick Armey, the former U.S. House Majority Leader and current Chairman of Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE). It appeared as an opinion editorial in the New York Sun.

"Looking back at the Goldwater campaign in 1964, there’s one thing that truly stands out in memory: Ronald Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing” speech. I dare say that was a speech unlike any we’ve heard before or since. What an awakening it was to so many of us! We asked, who is this guy? Who’s this actor and makes so much sense? Who is this Republican conservative who is so eloquent in the way he presents our ideas? How many of you were captivated by Ronald Reagan in 1964? I know I was…still that speech has never left my memory nor the moment, the stirring in my heart.

You see, Ronald Reagan actually revealed to us in 1964 something it took us years to understand: he knew something better than most of us. He knew the goodness of the American people and he had the decency to respect it. And we never really fully comprehended that about him until years later. In the 1960s, economic stagflation grew worse and totally baffled President Johnson. Nixon, too, was completely baffled by it and actually resorted to such things as mandatory government price controls, giving up on whom we are as Americans in order to try to fight inflation. Gerald Ford resorted to a button. Remember that? “Whip inflation now.” We used to turn it over and call it, “No instant miracles.” By the time Jimmy Carter came along it was horrible. Remember the days of malaise? Remember how desperate we were? I’ll never forget the nightmare of the American economy in the 1970’s after all those years of people either not having the understanding nor having the courage to deal with it, and the problem getting worse. It finally got so bad in the 70’s that Jimmy Carter had no explanation except to face the American people and say, “The problem is you, Ladies and Gentlemen you have a malaise.”

In the 70’s, we despaired. I remember coming home from teaching late at night listening to Jimmy Carter give that “Days of Malaise” speech, parking my car in the driveway, sitting there listening to it, and I felt like that old song, “Is that all there is?” You know we worked all our life, we dreamed, we hoped, we prayed, we tried everything we could. Is this all we have? Is it just this malaise? And then Ronald Reagan came back onto center stage for most of us.

Well, of course as you know, he was elected, in 1980. What a marvelous opportunity for America! Boy, what a day that was for me to remember! To think that a man that conservative could be elected president in America today, what a reprieve from all the years of despair that I felt in the aftermath of the Goldwater defeat. And, it was marvelous. I remember I had a bounce in my step and I was feeling good.

We watched Ronald Reagan and learned from him—freedom works. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ronald Reagan’s first two years in office was a miracle, an economic miracle. He changed President Ford’s model. Instead of “Whip inflation now,” he said, “Let’s whip inflation first.” Ronald Reagan knew the road from malaise to prosperity would be painful but he had the courage to travel it. And it was painful. Some of you all remember the elections of 1982. Still, during that time he did pass his first budget and get his first tax reductions in place in order to restore economic growth and job creation. He demonstrated the courage and the foresight that distinguishes his presidency forever. Yet it was not understood and appreciated, even by his friends at the time.

Do you remember the panic that set across the conservative and Republican field after the elections of 1982? We lost a few senators. I guess we lost the Senate. There was a panic. Yet, Ronald Reagan knew what he knew. He did not doubt. He did not wallow around in self-reservation or reconsideration. He understood what would work and he committed to it. And in all that panic in the aftermath of the 1982 elections, he was the one man who, more than at any other time in our lifetime, exemplified the idea of courage of your convictions. Ronald Reagan with one simple phrase, “Stay the course” faced the panic and steadied Congress and the nation.

What an inspiration it was to so many of us that he would dare to say, “Stay the course.” People were falling around him and people were wilting from him, people were denouncing him, and distancing from him. And he never wavered in his courage of his commitment to the ideas that he knew would work. And what did he give us? He gave us a resurrection of the American economy.

Especially in his second term, Ronald Reagan took the lessons of freedom that he had applied to the economy and which had given us prosperity and applied them to foreign policy and the Soviet Empire. Consider what Ronald Reagan did when he saw the Berlin Wall. He said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!” That assertion of liberty by Ronald Reagan may have been the strongest moment in the life of at least a generation of Eastern Europeans. This one statement gave them the strongest evidence that there was hope for liberty.

Again, Ronald Reagan had the courage. Do you know that statement was put into the speech by Ronald Reagan, taken out of the speech by his advisors, put into the speech again by Ronald Reagan, and taken out of the speech again by his advisors? They thought they had him. In the plane he put it back in the speech, himself, in his own handwriting. What was needed was the conviction to rise above the bad advice of people that didn’t have the strength to dare and the will to care. And so he did."

"Three Royal Navy vessels 'seized by Iran'"

"The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that it is investigating reports that three Royal Navy vessels have been seized by Iran. HMS Brocklesby on patrol in the northern Persian Gulf last March. The Iranians were said to have arrested eight Royal Navy crew as well as finding weapons and maps on board the vessels. The state-run satellite station Al-Alam was reported to have said that the vessels had been detained in Iranian territorial waters near the Shatt al-Arab waterway that divides Iran from Iraq. It described the impounded vessels only as "warships". The report said: "Iranian forces confiscated the ships and eight military personnel on board."
