Reagan Criticized for 'Ignoring' AIDS Epidemic
CNSNEWS.com ^ | 6/11/04 | Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - Several homosexual advocacy groups are closed on Friday for a day of mourning -- but they won't be mourning President Ronald Reagan.

Equality California, which is fighting to legalize same-sex marriage, announced that it would join the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in closing its offices on June 11, 2004 in memory of the millions of people who have died of AIDS.

"As California's state-wide LGBT advocacy organization, whose roots come out of the AIDS pandemic, we are closing in honor of our brothers and sisters who died as a result of President Reagan's silence and failure to act," said Equality California Executive Director Geoffrey Kors.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force also announced that it would close on June 11 "in memory of all those we have lost to AIDS," the group's website said.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force website also carried a letter from Executive Director Matt Foreman, who blames President Reagan and "evangelical Christian conservatives" for deliberately ignoring the AIDS epidemic.

In the letter, addressed to his best friend Steven who died of AIDS in 1995, Foreman writes that even now, "I'm not able to set aside the shaking anger I feel over Reagan's non-response to the AIDS epidemic or for the continuing anti-gay legacy of his administration."

Foreman said he believes his friend Steven would still be alive today "if the Reagan administration had mounted even a tepid response to the epidemic."

Foreman believes the Reagan's administration's response was deliberate -- "dictated by the grip of evangelical Christian conservatives who saw gay people as sinners and AIDS as God's well-deserved punishment." He singles out Pat Buchanan, William Bennett, and Gary Bauer as three of the conservatives who never let science interfere with politics.

Foreman concludes that the "unholy pact President Reagan and the Republican Party entered with the forces of religious intolerance" has "grown exponentially stronger" over the years, and he sees that as Reagan's legacy.

Other homosexual advocacy groups, including the Human Rights Campaign and the Log Cabin Republicans, expressed sadness at Reagan's passing.

"President Reagan will be remembered in part for his leadership in defeating the discriminatory Briggs Amendment in 1978, which would have banned gay and lesbian Californians from teaching in public schools," said Cheryl Jacques, who heads the Human Rights Campaign.

As California governor, Reagan opposed the Briggs Amendment, and activists credit him with turning voters against it.

Patrick Guerriero, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, called Reagan "one of our nation's greatest presidents" and said his "inspirational vision for America relied on optimism, hope and an enduring faith in individual freedom."

I'm not in a position to prove or disprove any assertion about any disease -- I am a mathematician, not a virologist or epidemiologist. But I know from personal experience how science works. I am willing to accept the overwhelming scientific consensus about HIV and AIDS because I trust mainstream science much more than I trust a conspiracy-mongering website most of whose quotes and information are ten years old.

My apologies if my tone seems harsh here. HIV and AIDS are a grave matter. You will please understand my concern at what I believe to be false and dangerous assertions.

There is some truth to this, though not the way they're spinning it. Reagan didn't preassure public health officials to take the steps necessary to contain the epidemic precisely because homosexual activists threw a hissy fit when such measures were proposed. David Horowitz has done Yeoman's work showing how the homosexual activist organizations fought bathhouse closures, mandatory testing of at-risk population groups, contact tracing, and test reporting. Still to this day we do not know how many people have HIV because results of tests are not reported to public health officials.

Political correctness is to blame for the Aids epidemic. Reagan's only fault was in not standing up to it. But one can hardly blame him: politicians have only so much political capital. Taking on the homosexual lobby was not a priority, and rightly so.

Then show me the research which isolated HIV?

Do you accept the overwhelming consensus about "Global Warming," too?

THE GROUP

The Group for the Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV-AIDS Hypothesis came into existence as a group of signatories of an open letter to the scientific community. The letter (dated June 6, 1991) has been submitted to the editors of Nature, Science, The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. All have refused to publish it. In 1995 The Group was able to get a letter published in Science.

You can also sign the statement below online.

To the editor:

It is widely believed by the general public that a retrovirus called HIV causes the group diseases called AIDS. Many biochemical scientists now question this hypothesis. We propose that a thorough reappraisal of the existing evidence for and against this hypothesis be conducted by a suitable independent group. We further propose that critical epidemiological studies be devised and undertaken.

The AIDS situation never qualified for the definition of epidemic in this country, let alone pandemic. The term outbreak may be more appropriate.

That's not true. Aids was an epidemic for certain population groups: homosexuals, intravenus drug users, and hemopheliacs. Consistent with your definition, it spread rapidly though these population groups and infected many at the same time. At one time it was estimated that over half of homosexual men had HIV.

It is true that in the US it was never a pandemic or an epidemic that spread to the general population, but rather remained largely confined to these high-risk groups. The scandel is that the public health authorities treated it as if it were a general epidemic rather than a group-specific one.

Aids is a pandemic in certain African countries.

The rest of your post was quite true.

The crackpots are coming out of the woodwork, I see. This is very sad. The terrible part of it is that there are some people with real credentials backing this "HIV doesn't cause AIDS" nonsense. Trouble is, they're all tenured geasers. Yet another reason to abolish tenure.

You'll find, I'm afraid, that it just isn't worth wasting time debating this in a nonscientific public forum. I've tried and I simply gave up. And yes, I do have a degree in the field.

HIV has not only been isolated, isolates are commercially available at the moment and are everyday currency in a modern virology laboratory. Pictures of HIV in direct physical association with CD40 cells are available widely - HERE and HERE are two presentations for the lay person that contain such electron microscopy.

Undoubtedly there are deficiencies in our current model of the syndrome - certainly there are other ways than HIV to suppress immune function. But anyone attempting to discredit that model by an infinite number of objections is going to have to provide an alternate model that explains the provable presence of HIV in an overwhelming number of AIDS cases, the direct correlation between virus titer and the disease itself, and an alternate reason for the proen efficacy of the protease inhibitors that are our current treatment regimen.

End of story. I'm not debating it on this thread beyond this, period.

Okay. I will accept your interpretation, even though I do not necessarily define homosexuals as a population.

My main argument was that in the U.S. AIDS was certainly not pandemic.

Odd how the bottom line recommendations agree with what the Bible teaches.

Josh McDowell teaches that God gives us commandments or rules to "provide and protect". Makes sense to me...

One day I tried to explain the perversion factor of homosexuality to someone by explaining that in hetrosexuality, virginity until marriage is a goal or something held in esteem. There is NOTHING like that in homosexuality, marriage or no.

My God!

President Reagan delegated his authority to the people responsible for the sexually transmitted diseases prevention programs in our country. The man responsible for this program was Jack Kirby, of the CDC.

Ironically, Jack Kirby today is also suffering the disease of Alzheimer's.

Although I live 1,000 miles away from my father today, we have been on the telephone together for President Reagan's funeral. He may not be able to understand current events today, but his memories of President Reagan are as Strong today, as they ever were.

So, when some idiot liberals attacks President Reagan about AIDS, they do not know what they are talking about.

For good or bad, my father was responsible for that program and has accepted both the credit and blame.

In retrospect, my father wishes that they had realized how unusual and devastating this disease was. In all honesty, for the first two years, they treated it as just another sexually transmitted disease.

Once the reality of this disease was learned, our Nation promptly dedicated over $5 billion dollars in an effort to isolate and control this viral infection.

Today, this father and son are standing by each other in remembrance of a great President. A President that honestly cared about each and every citizen.

The next time I listen to a Liberal insulting President Reagan about his AIDs policies, I will take it as a personal insult directed toward my own father.

Homosexual Agenda Ping - Haven't read this yet, but will in a minute!

The homosexual promoters have their heads in a dark, dark place if they think President Reagan is responsible for their wildly promiscuous sexually deviant acts which brought them AIDS.

The ultimate in irresponsibility and indeed cruelty. If homosexuals care about other homosexuals, they'd stop giving each other AIDS. No one else is giving it to them.

Regarding the figures of who gets AIDS, the figures are a little ambiguous. But MOST of it is related to men having sex with men. Many of the women who get it are either prostitutes, or women whose "boyfriends" or husbands are bisexual. Same for the drug users - many of them prostitute themselves, often same sex prostitution. Take away "men having sex with men" and you have a TINY amount of AIDS contraction.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist. (It be busy.)
