LIVE THREAD: Pres. Bush pays respects and calls on Mrs. Reagan

Posted on 06/10/2004 2:28:07 PM PDT by alisasny

Alot of dignataries are now showing up to pay respects. McCain, Guiliani, Gorby, Karzai, etc.

Cspan has live coverage. Bush expected at 7 but could be earlier? He is then going to visit with Mrs. Reagan.

Guard changes about every half hour at .28 and .58 of the hour. One is going on right now.

Wish I could attend

My wife and I got back about an hour ago and I'm glad we made the trip. We took the 7:00 am out of Trenton, arrived Union Square @ 9:30 and got in line at about 10:00 am. The lines were moving, great people and, plenty of water being provided by USMC Medics. We were inside the Rotunda by 1:15.It was very beautiful inside (and air conditioned!) and, the most solemn event I had ever attended.I felt almost removed from what was going on, as though it were almost a dream. If I may, here's some of the details:

As I said, the people were great. In line were VFW Vets from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and probably others that I missed.

There were Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, and, military members of every service in uniform. Their uniforms were crisp and their shoes shined. They were paying their respects and were dressed for an inspection.

Plenty of President Reagan hats, buttons and t-shirts and, I'm happy to say, plenty of George Bush as well.

Of course, TV Stations from all over the place. If I heard the question once from a reporter, I heard it a dozen times: "Are you surprised at how many people have come to pay their respects to President Reagan? The couple times I listened for the answer, the answer was no.

Last and least, Al-Katie Colon was there, just having completed an interview with Douglas Brinkley. After the interview she was all smiles, working the line like a politician, glad handing, autographs, etc. I thought it pretty disrespectful but, typical for her. My wife was pretty emphatic when I asked if I should go talk with her. I didnt want to ruin the morning, so I stayed in my place. But next time.....

It was one of those times that remind you what is so great about this country; the people, the tradition and, the respect that Americans can show for a great President.

I heard on Fox News this morning, that there is a statute that requires a retired President to make his funeral plans within a year of his leaving office.

It's actually WHEN they take office. The requirement began after Kennedy.

We all need to pray that he gets through his eulogy tomorrow morning...well, on second thought, I don't mind if he cries. I have.

I think the babies love the acoustics in the Rotutda.

I dunno, sounds like.....life.

I believe that RR would just smile over an embarrassed mom and dad.

It looked like he asked her if she would pray with him or something. Bush was very very quick here.....he didn't linger around to hog up the line. Very classy.

YEs, he is very classy. Very classy, very professional. We are so blessed to have him, and Mrs. Bush, and Condoleezza Rice, and Colin Powell, and Donald Rumsfeld, and John Ashcroft, and so many other quality members of this administration.

If we as conservatives, and those who support the President, don't get off our asses and vote for him, then that which I just typed, and a lot more, is what we're going to lose in seven months.

Just a sober parting thought.

It's true. If this jackass clears the Rotunda so His Majestic Self can brood in front of the Catafalque....

...he should be ridden out of town on a rail!

Oh wait, that's been done...

By God, the Great Unwashed cannot be spared His Presence as He contemplates the Ironies of Life in front of Reagan's casket.

Jeez. Watch him leave a haiku or some trash like that on the casket.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

It's the circle of life, isn't it? Seeing pregnant ladies, the babies, the young, and the not so young. We are a wonderful country. Yes, we are.
