LIVE THREAD: Pres. Bush pays respects and calls on Mrs. Reagan

Posted on 06/10/2004 2:28:07 PM PDT by alisasny

Alot of dignataries are now showing up to pay respects. McCain, Guiliani, Gorby, Karzai, etc.

Cspan has live coverage. Bush expected at 7 but could be earlier? He is then going to visit with Mrs. Reagan.

Guard changes about every half hour at .28 and .58 of the hour. One is going on right now.

And, I also think that the Good Lord couldn't stomach having Mr. Bill preside over such things either. Thank you God for calling home President Reagan on W's watch.

I have prayed that, also. It would have been horrible if President Reagan had died while Clinton was president.

Yeah, it seemed like that to me. Pres. Bush looked like he was viewing the crowd for people he knew as they were leaving and was ready to start chatting with all of them.

I can't believe he would say something like that. Does he not know that these plans have been drawn out by the family. I'm sure it was even concocted by the repubs the exact timing of President Reagan's passing. </sarcasm>

That sniping has got to stop! The dignataries are all moving through fast so more people outside can get into the rotunda to view President Reagan. The lines stop when dignataries arrive -- what do you want them to do -- hang around and make the people outside wait longer.

Give the Bush Family a break for the next few days and quit the continual sniping at them please!

Reagan son said story: Reagan saw a woman on TV who needed money so Ronald Reagan sent her a check for $2000.00. She appeared on news with check in frame and was going to keep check instead of cashing it. Ronald Reagan saw this and sent ANOTHER check with a note that said "please cash this one".

I heard this differently ... the amount was $200 and the woman's friends told her she couldn't cash the original seeing that it had RR's signature on it. She spoke with RR and explained her dilemma. He in turn spoke with his accountant and had him issue the check after placing a stop payment on the original. I think I heard this in one of yesterday's tributes. I find my version a little more plausible.

lol ... I saw one of Reagan's speechwriters tell that story last night .... except he said that it was a 500.00 check and that Reagan noticed by his bank statements that it hadn't been cashed. He called her, she said she framed it, he said he was sending another and she'd better cash this one. She did. Maybe she was one of many he helped ....

I completely agree with you, PKM.

This carping is ridiculous.

I have a different take:

I think Bush tried to keep it short and not break down so he wouldn't be accused of using it as a "political" photo-op (even though I don't believe Bush would have even tried to suggest such a thing). We all know that's what the dems would do, so that's what they would accuse Bush of doing.

No one was "sniping" at GHWB for not spending a lot of time paying his respects, but rather for stopping to chat with people he knew as he and Barbara were leaving. It wasn't really "sniping" either.

Yeah, even Barbara knew it wasn't appropriate..but god forbid someone on this thread should mention it.

SHEESH.

indeed. makes you wonder what is going through people's minds - are they so plugged into themselves as political figures that they forget what is going on around them?

Another very strange comment.

Do you wear your left shoe on your right foot?

You seem to be completely out of step with everybody else.
