A BOOZY dentist collapsed over a patient while extracting her tooth sending her fleeing in terror.
Colin McKay, 45, treated agonised Andrea Harrison despite drinking six glasses of wine during his lunch hour.
He took two attempts to inject an anaesthetic into her gum, then began the extraction before the jab had time to take effect, the General Dental Council heard yesterday.
He finally slumped sweating and shaking across her face and chest before she pushed him off and ran away.
A second dentist at the practice in Halton, Leeds, later completed the emergency extraction.
McKay, since suspended, admitted treating Mrs Harrison after drinking, not waiting for the anaesthetic and continuing with the procedure despite her distress.
He also accepted he had fallen across his patient.
Sarah Vaughan-Jones, for the Council, branded the consultation disastrous.
Mrs Harrison said: I was in a lot of pain and yelled out, but he carried on. He became very unsteady on his feet. Then he seemed to fall over me. I ended up running out.
McKay, of Leeds, was found guilty of serious professional misconduct.
The panel referred his case to its Health Committee, which can continue his suspension until he is deemed fit to practice.
Does anyone remember that W.C. Fields skit where he is a dentist and working on a woman's teeth? This reminded me of it.
They have dentists in the UK?
I liked the stooges routines better - especially when they blasted
She's lucky he didn't try to fill her cavities.
Well, at least someone was anaesthetised!
yikes....I noticed the headline says "girl" and the story refers to Mrs...
Ah, a little pain never hurt anyone.
I'm crestfallen.
Not for long
Classic DWI case.. Dentistry While Intoxicated
I had a similar experience here in CT with an oral surgeon. Drunkenness not an issue.
Because I would not let them put my 10 year old son asleep for a tooth extraction they administered the novacaine and did not wait for it to take effect. They had him climbing up the wall in an attempt to get me to let them put him under. This son had previously been to a dentist that administered the novacaine and allowed the anesthetic to properly take effect before working in his mouth.
My frustration here is that the state of CT health dept. is ignoring my complaints and I haven't even been asked for the description I gave above.
Well, now we know why the bad teeth..................
Ms. Vaughan-Jones is a real master of the obvious.
Why did he get drunk with all that fine laughing gas around?
In class we worked and persevered until we could perform such extractions after 10 glasses of wine,
or 6 tequilas.
Ping.
Agnes, Agnes, Agnes....
...and he used enough novocaine to numb me toes...
