Many millions of admirers cannot pay their respects personally to the Reagan Family.

In view of that, might I propose that we honor this great man (in a small way, granted) Ronald Reagan, by driving with our car headlights ON all day.

Great idea. Thank you for proposing that.

It's a nice idea, but some of us have our lights on always, while others drive cars with this feature built in.

It has been the case, this week in Los Angeles, that it has been especially overcast and that most people have been driving with their lights on. Still, I wondered on Monday if even more people had them on because of Reagan.

Yeah.... I'm one of those with the headlight automatic feature on my car. Hmmmm... maybe there's a manual override.

I've got a question for any in this thread that may know the answer. My flag has been at half/staff since I first heard of the President's death. What did Dubya proclaim? Am I to keep it that way for 30 days?

"...driving with our car headlights ON all day."

You must drive an older car. Most cars built since 2000 have their lights on automatically, whenever they're put in Drive.

It's a nice idea, but remember to lower flags to half staff on Friday, too. THAT is something that's not automatic, and really shows respect for President Reagan.

Daytime running lamps have made this gesture somewhat meaningless.

Well, I came into this thread - an obvious attempt at putting forth a suggestion to show respect and honor to a great President - and the whole thread denigrated into a debate on how headlights function.

This reminds me of the blonde who - while holding the key in her hand - thought she was locked out of her car because the battery in her "remote" was dead.

There were even snide remarks accusing the author of having an "older car"...a comment an elitist would thrive on.

Now, I have a 2000 vehicle, and a 2001 vehicle, and the lights DO NOT come on automatically, unless the outside lighting conditions are dim enough.

Now, if "headlight function" is going to override the point of offering respect and condolences, then do something else; drive with your flashers on, or put that little rear window flag you bought for 9/11 back on the car.

Take white shoe polish and write "God Bless President Reagan" across the back glass (not on the paint).

And those of you who thought this thread was about "headlight function", stop trying so hard to miss the point.

Unfortunately, I cannot turn mine off!

Will a American flag and numerous bumperstickers suffice?:-)

My next major road trip will be to California to visit the Reagan Library and to salute the best Commander in Chief that ever was.

God Bless the Reagan family.

Actually, I'm thinking about wearing a Reagan/Bush '84 campaign button on Friday.

Since I always drive everyday with my headlights on,
then I guess Friday, I will have to drive with them off,
so that I can properly honor President Reagan.

Just a side note:

Nissan is another victim of the DemoRAT trial lawyers going after the big bad corporation deep pockets. We need headlight control along with gun control I guess.

Nissan headlights

The blue-tinged xenon headlights of the Nissan Maxima have become a popular target for thieves who rip them from a car and sell them on the black market, including 277 incidents in Newark alone. The State of New Jersey, noting the epidemic of thefts in its state, has decided to take action -- by suing Nissan. Nissan should have anticipated that its customers would be victimized, says the State, and warned them before they bought the car. (Ronald Smothers, "Nissan Sued Over Theft-Prone Headlights", NY Times, Mar. 9; Crissa Shoemaker, "Lawsuit: Nissan withheld headlight theft risk", Courier-News, Mar. 9; Mitch Lipka, "Headlight theft wave spurs state to sue Nissan", Philadelphia Inquirer, Mar. 9). According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, Nissan was a leader in taking steps to prevent headlight thefts, so if this suit has legs, look for copycat lawsuits against other auto manufacturers--and this ludicrous theory of liability could end up being extended to other car parts or even carjackings. (Peter DeMarco, "Left in the dark", Boston Globe, Feb. 26; Rod Gibson, "Most-stolen cars? It's debatable", bankrate.com, Sep. 23, 2003).
