I was a little miffed with TCM for not mentioning President Reagan's passing on their website and for not having an immediate marathon of his movies. It seems I was a little premature, and I apologize.

If you'll hit the link above, there's a brief Reagan bio on that page. I only skimmed it, but it seems to be bereft of any partisanship.

It was on ESPN Classics the other day. I don't know if it's a rights issue, or if they were just going for the more obscure titles.

Bummed that the one major Reagan movie I've never seen, The Killers, isn't on that list. Guess I'll have to track it down on DVD.

There was a time TCM reacted immediately when an oldtime Hollywood star died. Then I think they got overwhelmed with Hollywood stars dropping left and right and changed the policy. TCM usually responds within the week the star died. And they always have a short memorial piece that runs several times a day, for a period of several days.

Killers is available on DVD. It's a Criterion, and it's got an earlier version on there in edition to the one in which Reagan appeared.

It's too bad they're not including the Brass Bancroft films, although they're not exactly regarded as the high points of his career. Still, fun B-movie fluff.

In fact, the best story I know is that Reagan was so embarrassed by the second film in the quartet, "Code of the Secret Service," he implored Warner Bros. to not release it. Supposedly, the studio compromised and gave it a release that excluded Los Angeles and New York, so he wouldn't be embarrassed by it in front of his friends. Yet somewhere a young Jerry Parr saw the picture, loved it, and was inspired by it to become a Secret Service agent. Flash forward 42 years, to the day when John Hinkley attempted to assassinate President Reagan. Reagan's life was saved when Secret Service agent Jerry Parr instructed the limo driver to rush to the hospital instead of returning to the White House.

For those interested, the films in the series are:

Secret Service of the Air
Code of the Secret Service
Smashing the Money Ring
Murder in the Air

What a story! I never knew that. (It almost sounds like a movie script in and of itself...)

I got a DVD recorder and I'll get them all. I'm a baseball fan and I loved the movie he made with Doris Day called "The Winning Team". It's a biography based on the life of St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander. All I have to say is what a life and what a man. To act with famous actors at Warner Brothers such as Errol Flynn and George Murphy and then go on to be Governor of California and then President of the United States is so unbelievable. To me it would be a dream come true. God bless President Ronald Reagan. God bless Nancy Reagan and the rest of his family.

One of my favorites is John Loves Mary (1949): A World War II veteran's marriage of convenience threatens his real wedding plans. Ronald Reagan, Patricia Neal, Jack Carson. Director: David Butler. BW-96m

and

Desperate Journey (1942): American pilots stranded in Germany during World War II fight their way to freedom. Errol Flynn, Alan Hale, Ronald Reagan. Director: Raoul Walsh. BW-108m

and

The Last Outpost (1951): Brothers on opposite sides of the Civil War join forces to fight off marauding Indians. Ronald Reagan, Rhonda Fleming, Bill Williams. Director: Lewis R. Foster. C-89m. This films is not one of Reagan's best, but it shows how Confederates and the Southern Cause was shown before the PC Crowd got the upper hand...
