It was just reported that Nancy Reagan has been interviewed, or commented to the news wires that the out pouring of sympathy and show of respect by the tens of thousands that continue to show up at the Presidential Library is unbelievable.
Do you mean they don't have an accurate count because they took the books? Surely they counted another way.
Articles in the PRESS-ENTERPRISE and DESERT SUN (found via Google News) said that Jane Wyman has spent the last few days quietly at home, updated via phone by Michael. One article said that she has frequently spoken with Nancy about Alzheimer's over the past several years.
In her later years, at least, Wyman has lived a life of deep religious faith. When Loretta Young was alive the two of them would attend Mass daily in Palm Springs, and each contributed a great deal to the Church.
I am used to not much sleep...hey, I am a college guy. I would be willing to drive to D.C. to pay my respects........except for one thing......my fear of driving in such a massive city. Gas prices are a lot better...less than $1.80 now! But, I doubt I could bring myself to drive in the chaos that will envelop DC in the next couple days.
But I don't think lack of buses was really an issue... I went to bed around 330am, and CSPAN and Fox had a live shot at that time of people continuously walking by the casket... There was never a moment when people weren't walking past it...
There were no memorial books out to be signed when I was there...
I think they can keep an accurate count just by how many bus trips they made... then add Kerry, who was too important to wait on a bus...
She sounds like the eptiome of class. As I understand it, Wyman left Reagan because of his politics.. not because she disagreed with them, but because she simply wanted to live the life of an actress.
LOL!
I think the lack of buses and the general slowness reduced the number of people who were able to pay their respects. Mind you, this was just during the early morning today; at all other times, it appeared to be a wonderfully well organized system.
The guy handing out the flyers telling people what not to bring to the library noted that whereas he had been going through cases of flyers around 10pm, at 1am he was handing out far fewer per hour.
Around 3am, a great many people had just given up and left.
After watching the private Reagan family viewing on CSPAN,
They showed Michael Reagan entering and giving his respects
ALL BY HIMSELF.
I don't know if that was because of schedule,or because of
some sort of estranged family problem......
And at Nancy as well. They endured alot.
I'm so glad she is receiving all of this outpouring of love.
Michael supposedly missed his father's last moments by only minutes... he got stuck in traffic...
It's too painful to think of life without the love of your life.
I hope she finds some comfort in knowing so many people loved her Ronny. In the coming days, weeks and months .. she will need all the support she can get
I hope it will help to give Nancy and the rest of the Reagan family some measure of comfort, in their time of grief, to know that president Reagan is so loved by the people of our nation.
That happened to me with the death of my father. I was on my way from Houston to Oklahoma and got there minutes after he died. It has been 20 years and I still think about it.
At least he did get to say goodbye the night before....Reagan said so on his program yesterday via phone.
I've always been curious if Nancy and Jane were on good terms. I imagine they had to see each other at Maureen, Michael, and the grandchildren's events.
Did Jane every remarry?
Michael was at the library prayer service the entire time as one of a dozen family members and closest friends; he attended with his wife and two children. After Nancy spent her time next to the casket, Michael hung back to have a moment alone before exiting. Nothing strange about that...I did that at my grandmother's funeral, simply wanted a private moment even though the rest of my family was also present at the service.
Just knowing that so many people are showing their respect makes me feel better too.
i don't think it's a myth... i've seen in happen a couple of times... both w/in one year... of course, that doesn't mean it happens all of the time; hence your experience...
