Must admit that I haven't been able to load the program in question, to listen. Thanks for your telling of it. Sounds like the 'good GK' was the gracious man he has been to most guests he brings on the air. Is there a chance he's mellowing with age? [Don't get to hear A Prairie Home Companion any more ... not traveling the interstates anymore.]
He claims to be 6' 3". Apparently TV does make people look wider in relation to their height. Keillor did a show at my son's Lutheran college and I didn't hear anything about him being short.
I've never seen the guy in person.
Some people are going to blow things out of proportion and are just looking to make others look bad for whatever petty reason (the current political climate includes small groups of people on both sides full of hate).
I heard the show saturday night (like I do most weekends), and I thought GK was quite respectful and I imagine that the few that cheered probably looked like idiots in the audience - I'd bet they got some mean stares from others.
I don't always agree with everything on Praire Home Companion, but then again, I'm that way about anything I see on TV or hear on the radio. I like it, and they have some great musical numbers. It's certainly better written and mostly cleaner than most other stuff you hear on the radio or see on TV.
During the 90s they had some of the best political humor targeted towards Clinton that I heard - some people don't understand that they are going to make jokes about whichever person/party is in office.
It was a REAL shock to see this short, pudgy little guy.
That must be it... and like i say, I had a VERY clear mental image of him when I was younger...
Well, I wouldn't go that far. The title is accurate as far as it goes. The problem is, it's too easy for a reader -- especially one who's looking for a fight -- to infer from the title that Keillor wanted the cheer(s) that he received.
I think so. I don't know if it's a sign, but it seems like he's had an awful lot of bluegrass, what I'd call "original country music", and gospel-style bands/performers on these days. That maybe just me noticing it, because I'm thinking about it.
Ok, that was my take too.
I was watching some fishing show on saturday night and the host did not once say "This Cast is for the Gipper!"
I hate all these liberal fishing shows!
OK, I heard it wrong. I can believe that fairly easily, since I did wonder how he was so ready to go with it. Criticism retracted. In that case, he did a fine job. (one or two others said I was hysterical; I don't think that was fair.)
But in honor of Chesterton, I still refuse to honor him by calling him GK. It's Garry from me.

As I posted earlier in another thread, they cheered in my ultra-liberal neighborhood too. Sick, hateful creatures.
No twisting meant? You reported back not only the wrong thing, but you divined what his intent was in singing it.
Keillor gave a fine, classy announcenment and eulogy:
"One of the great public men of our time, Ronald Reagan, died today at the age of 93, (audience: "ohhh", heckler 1: "woohoo!" heckler 2: "yeah!" ) just this afternoon, Ronald Reagan, a great President and a great man, who set a great standard for civility. We want to think about him, and about his family for just a moment, and wish them well from all of us. He was a great man who befuddled us old liberals for years, mainly by his great shining charm, which never, ever failed him." (Song: "Let It Shine" - soulful, prayerful spiritual.)
I thought the second heckler might have been telling the first to shut up.
Well, I took your advice and listened to the segement in question. Garrison Keillor's tone seems to change to one of mock respect as he speaks of President Reagan. I have never listened to this guy before until now, but to me, the sarcasm fairly dripped from his voice as he spoke about the recently deceased leader.
I didn't hear the show; however, I think what you're talking about is standard-issue "leftist angry approval applause." You'll notice that leftists rarely just laugh at a political joke -- if they like it, they'll clap loudly. If you have the opportunity to watch them do it, you'll notice their expressions, which are feral and angry.
They're also the ones whose cars still have Gore/Leiberman (or even Nader/LaDuke) bumper stickers on their cars.
I don't particularly mind honest liberals. But the "angry liberal clappers" are not sane.
That kindly smooth tone he took is his only tone. That is who he is, and if you haven't heard more than three minutes of him ever, you can't very well judge a man's buried sarcasm.
