Tiger Woods makes donation to Army foundation

The Associated Press

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Tiger Woods, who spent a week with the Special Forces at Fort Bragg after competing in the Masters, has donated $50,000 to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, the Army said Monday.

Woods spent two days of his April visit training with Army Special Operations Command soldiers. He fired weapons, learned tactics and performed a free-fall parachute jump.

In a letter to Lt. Gen. Philip R. Kensinger Jr., commanding general of the command, Woods wrote that his experiences at Fort Bragg showed a commitment to service.

The letter said the $50,000 donation was made on behalf soldiers whom Woods was proud to have met.

"It is an inescapable conclusion that all these young men and women, who protect our way of life, do so at the risk of paying the final price by losing their own," Woods wrote. "Consider (this donation) my small way of saying thanks to you for all that you do for America.

"Your people made of this visit a thrill of a lifetime, bringing into focus so many of my childhood memories from stories my dad would tell of the rigors and importance of training as a team, of unit pride and of life in the bush as a Green Beret."

Woods' father, Earl, served with Special Forces at Fort Bragg.

"I keep telling my dad that if I wasn't ever introduced to golf, I would be right here following in his footsteps," Woods wrote.

According to its Web site, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to providing college scholarships and educational counseling to the children surviving special operations personnel who are killed in training or on missions.

At the end of his week with the Special Forces, Woods conducted a golf clinic for children who are military dependents.

I agree. If only more public figures conducted themselves in such a way!

Anyway, I was very impressed with this.

This isn't the first time Tiger Woods has shown support for the military.

Tiger is a class act, he has handled his fame well. I remember when Clinton tried to use him politically, and he flat turned him down. How about my guy Fred Couples in the Memorial, he and Els put on quite a show.

90% of Golfers tend to exhibit conservative values, support the military, are religious, have strong family values, work hard, vote Republican. I guess only Nascar people are similar.

That's certainly true of the golfers & NASCAR folks I know.

I do play golf, but I suck at it, so don't really consider myself a 'golfer'.
