DFU RONALD REAGAN LIBRARY REPORT -- it was FReeping awesome!
6-7-04 | dfu

Posted on 06/07/2004 11:24:06 PM PDT by doug from upland

It was a moving and awesome experience today at the Reagan Library. In the FReeper motorhome were BobJ,Dio, Mr. & Mrs. Doughty One, RonC, and Bob. Who did I miss?

I was off the FReeway at about noon and finally mad it into the line at about 1:20. I made it to the rotunda at about 4pm.

The reports on the news are lying. If you are there now, your wait will be a minimum of 5 hours. People just kept coming and coming and coming.

Did anyone watch KTLA tonight? They interviewed me on camera and I gave them some good stuff about the Gipper and his vision that defeated the greatest evil of the 20th Century. Also, I spoke to NBC and Gannett news service.

The outpouring of love for this remarkarkable man made the trip worthwhile. I understand they are extending the hours to 11pm tomorrow night. I spent a great deal of time walking by the line and saying hi to people. I finally left at about 9:30.

Doug McIntyre of KABC stopped by and was looking for me. Unfortunately, I was in line and missed him. He has a great show and had me in studio one night during the Clinton years, coining the term "Clintonologist."

Those who were there, please check in.

Don't you just love it when the leftist RAT b*st*rds must listen to a week of great things about the Gipper?

The out pouring of respect from Southern Californians and others that have traveled to this area is immense and impressive. KABC estimated the crowd at the college at 30k and the back-up on the Freeways stretches for miles. God Bless those trying to get to the Library and God Bless the FReepers for what they did.

Sorry you didn't make it. But your post is a tribute and clear evidence that California has a huge number of Reagan conservatives. Some of the local news images we were watching were beyond belief at the outpouring of respect.

The traffic must have been horrendous.

I don't think wearing fancy clothes is appropriate - especially heels. Coat and tie could be pretty stifling if during the daytime.

I wore a jacket and tie today, and my daughter wore heels. Granted, the marine layer kept the heat off, but we brought our own water and were prepared to sweat more and stand longer.

Could we do any less?

President Reagan never removed his jacket while he was in the Oval Office.

Doug, reports tonight on CNN say Kerry is going to the library tomorrow for his photo op! I haven't read that anywhere else yet........but I wouldn't put it past him.

Traffic on the 23 was backed up over two miles and I heard it was worse on the 118. Californians love Reagan and this proves it.

Perhaps cancel my last response. Isn't he going to the funeral on Friday, not the library on Tuesday?

As usual, it took FReepers to come to the rescue. BobJ and I noticed that people were cutting in line. We thought it could get ugly, so we were actually directing the sheriffs where to put the yellow tape. They took our direction very well.

The turnout does not surprise me at all. I live in the Bay Area, and I was very tempted to go, and I still may. But it sounds like there may not be enough time to accommodate everyone who wants to be there. The estimate of 100,000 total viewers is likely to be off by an order of magnitude at least.

I'm not sure how you felt about it, but some of the attire I oberved today was distrubing. Entering into the presence of Reagan was a unique moment for me, one that I could not in good concience have approached with casual clothing. I agree with your comment about Reagan and his ethic of dressing formally in the Oval office.

I understand how you feel , and I myself would dress appropriately , but I think anyone who went to the trouble of going there shouldn't be chided . All my best to you from Japan .

I'll have to say that I cannot comprehend O'Reilly making such a comment. Reagan just died two days ago, and O'Reilly is overtaxed by an ourpouring of interest? That's pretty sad.

Well .. my assumption is that he's gotten some complaints (from liberals no doubt) who are sick of the Reagan stuff (too positive for 'em I guess).

I just thought we could have fun and FReep O'Reilly that we are happy with the coverage as it is.

Of course, O'Reilly could be sick of the coverage - who knows?

Aftyer hosting the FReepVee all day, Dio and I were sitting there about 9pm thinking we were not going to get our chance to say our goodbyes. We have a big story to tell but are so bushed it will have to wait for tomorrow, but I will drop a few hints.

We drove up to Library in a private vehicle, were taken to the back door and through the Library offices, got a personal tour right up to the viewing area, and, a experienced a dicey moment with the Secret Service that unfortunately may have to remain a "what happens at the library stays at the library" event.

I kid you not. A pretty unbelieveable end to a memorable day!

BTW - Great to see all the FReepers who stopped by the FReepVee, I'd guess 25 or so!

Also, the news said they were extending the viewing tomorrow to 11pm.

" This is the only time in my life that I wish I was in California "

I'm a CT Yank , but have often fantasized about living in Southern Cal in the " golden days " which to me were the late 50's to late 60's : surf , hot rods , sunshine , Beach Boys , babes ...American Graffiti ...

Whew. Glad I won't have to bail you out. Heh heh heh.

I look forward to your report tomorrow. You were able to meet a lot more of the FReepers than I was.

We had a good time relaxing before standing in line Bob. Great job on the facilities.

Take care you two.

Last fall I was fortunate enough to see President Reagan's boyhood home in Dixon, Illinois. It was a tremendous experience. I'd imagine that your emotional experience at seeing the president's casket was much like the lacrimose reaction I had upon entering the tomb of President Lincoln. Both men did much to advance this country, in spite of the constant attacks of anarchists, marxists and Democrats.

Local news is finally telling it true. 3-4 hours on the Freeway, hours on 8+ hours to get the shuttle. I believe that there may be people heading there right now at 6am who are not going to get to see the casket.
