Republican pollsters say so far, the numbers among Republican voters dont send up any red flags for Bush's supporter. An Annenberg Public Policy Center (search) survey conducted between May 17 and 23 showed GOP support for the president was strong, with an 85 percent favorable rating.
While Republican lawmakers approval ratings as a group generally go down when the presidents numbers go down, Ed Goeas of the Tarrance Group said he does not foresee any chiseling away of the conservative base, on or off the Hill.
"There is certainly hand-wringing when there is bad news in Iraq," he said. "But in reality you have a very loyal Republican base for Bush a more loyal party than I have seen in recent memory."

I just wish Republicans would publicly speak up supporting him and R. Senators, like John Warner would put things in perspective. ( he wants to hold hearings on Abu Ghraib!)
4th Estate or 5th Column?
15% ain't hard to overcome. I am looking forward to a landslide in November for GW.
I must admit I've met a couple of VERY disaffected GOPers from New Jersey who say they flat-out will not vote for W. I think they've spent WAY too much time reading/believing the New York Times, but the phenomenon is out there.
Yep.
The only one's to question this obvious rift are those who would have to get help in their knowledge of who is POTUS presently, and what Iraq is or what the acronym ME stands for..
The poll said 85% approvale among Republicans. They must be the other 15%. Then there are the conservatives, who are not registered Republicans, who insist on cutting off their nose, to spite their face, voting for Kerry. (A conservative voting for third party candidate or staying home is withholding a vote from Bush, therefore is helping and effectively voting for Kerry)
If they're beyond redemption, I tell the disaffected to vote against BOTH major parties by pulling the lever for Nader.
...Sounds like you and the Viking are the only reactionaries with a "My way or the highway" approach. Anyone critical of the administrations policies is a DU troll. Anyone seeking a meaningful debate on the administrations policies on FR is irrelevent...
Approval ratings don't equate to "will vote for" ratings. There are conservatives who would like to see Bush more conservative and thus don't approve of him. But in November they won't condemn their families and neighbors to life under the opposition by voting Kerry or third party (which is the same as voting for Kerry). They'll not vote *for* Bush, but they'll pull that particular lever anyway to vote against Kerry.
FYI ping!
Dude. I've known these individuals for years. They're real people who are not lying to me. They're idiots, obviously, but real nonetheless.
The findings indicate some of the same things that David Keene was saying following the ACU meetings...
Now, the summer silly season is fast approaching, so perhaps one has to cut these folks a little slack, but their reasoning defies logic and represents little more than a hopeful fantasy among those who go to bed at night hoping the conservative Republican coalition will somehow fracture. It isn't going to happen at least not this time around. While the Democrats were circulating their theory, the president himself was addressing the 40th anniversary banquet of the American Conservative Union here in Washington. To say that he was well received by the audience of more than 700 activist conservative leaders would be a gross understatement. Indeed, we welcomed him as one of our own. Those attending agreed, I think, with my observation in introducing him that they, like millions of conservatives around the country, are prepared to do their part to see to it that he is re-elected this fall.
I will probably come back and read on Wednesday, so anything you send works for me.
Busy weekend, plus distress over Ronny!
Nope... the base is solid. The apparent malcontents are few and just overly loud.
My goal is to see GWB take California in November!
Never say never.

You and me both. I also think it's possible. Just wait until Arnie starts to stump for Bush in CA.

GOP sees opportunities in California
Associated Press
CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Democratic strength in recent presidential elections has left California Republicans nostalgic for the last actor-turned-governor -- Ronald Reagan -- and looking toward their new one to improve GOP prospects.
Republicans say privately President Bush has little if any chance of capturing the state's prize of 55 electoral votes. Contemporary history and math also indicate John Kerry should keep California in the Democratic column -- Bill Clinton won the state in 1992 and 1996, Al Gore beat Bush by double digits there in 2000 and the president's approval ratings remain in the low 40s.
Nevertheless, Republicans see a wealth of opportunities on the horizon, due in large part to shifting population growth and the broad popularity of their new governor -- Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"I have always maintained that California is far more competitive than pundits believe," said former Gov. Gray Davis, the Democrat who was recalled by voters and replaced by Schwarzenegger last year. "Democrats can't win this state on the cheap. Kerry has to spend money here, and I believe he knows that."
Political strategists largely credit excitement about Schwarzenegger with helping to increase Republican voter registration in the state, cutting the advantage for the Democrats from more than 10 percent in 2000 to about 8 percent.
