Gore says Miami Mayor Penelas betrayed Democrats

Former Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore delivered a harsh message to Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, three months before he faces a U.S. Senate primary.

BY BETH REINHARD

breinhard@herald.com

Former Vice President Al Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election by 537 votes in Florida, on Saturday called Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas ``the single most treacherous and dishonest person I dealt with during the campaign anywhere in America.''

The statement was e-mailed by a Gore spokesman in response to a Herald inquiry about Penelas's role in the 2000 campaign. Gore supporters say the vice president had counted on Penelas for a late boost in the Hispanic community, and the mayor did not come through.

The harsh remarks come just three months before Penelas faces a Democratic primary election for the U.S. Senate. Gore's reproach could seriously damage the mayor's bid to succeed Sen. Bob Graham, since party loyalists tend to dominate turnout in a primary.

In a telephone interview Saturday evening, Penelas defended himself, saying he was ``by Gore's side from the very beginning.''

''Al Gore has a right to be upset about the election, but had he won his home state of Tennessee or West Virginia, we wouldn't be here,'' Penelas said. ``He also owes an explanation as to why he waited until the middle of October to engage in Florida.''

He said Gore has declined to return his phone calls to discuss the 2000 campaign.

Gore is going bonkers...just sit back, and enjoy the show...I predict the next meltdown will involve the Gore "I don't care about being President" beard.

Watch it grow, watch Gore melt.

Just recently....Sick Slick's name came up in a conversation at work. One person happened to be from Arkansas....She said, that people in Arkansas were generally flabbergasted that Sick was elected POTUS the first time....They knew this guy was a flimflam artist, from the getgo.

Did you catch Ed Koch on Sean Hannity's guest show a couple months ago? Koch said after working his tail off for Gore in 2000, he wouldn't vote for him as dogcatcher now.

My gosh, is he STILL on this? He knows good and well he lost that election. I suppose he is mad because this guy wouldn't cooperate with his attempt to steal the election though. What an absolute pathetic excuse for a human being he is. Thanking God even more lately that the Supremes put a stop to his treachery! BTW. He didn't really lose by the 500 odd votes, as the fake ones were actually thrown out.

"Al Gore is an honest face of a socialist, liberal, democrat. He either lords over you with a condescending smirk or reeks of bitter anger and envy if thrown from power."

John Kerry too.

"Nothing nice about seeing someone totally losing his mind in public arena"

I agree, but will make an exception in Gore's case.

True story: I had to go to the Dollar Store tonight and was surprised to see shelf after shelf of Al and Tipper Gore's "Family" book priced at, what else, $1 each.

Karyn M. PhD is a pompous, arrogant, condescending jerk who cannot stand informed, confident dissent to her point of view on hot button issues to which she reacts like the guy in Lost in a Harem, the Abbott and Costello movie:

I lived in Miami for three years (1999-2002). Little Havana is NOT a "crime infested ghetto." There is a small portion east of 27th Ave and north of Flagler that is dominated by Hondurans and Guatemalans that is pretty bad, but other than that it is OK.

The funny thing is, "Little Havana" is now only about 33% Cuban, as most second generation Cubans have moved out to places like Kendall and Pembroke Pines. Oh, BTW Bogey, most second generation Cubans I know speak fluent English, using Spanish only with parents, grandparents or in international business.

What Janet Waco did to Elian is unforgivable. End of story...

Hey "Dude," nice to see you again. I see you're still an idiot.

What's that rule on Free Republic? The one about bringing up old disputes on new threads?

For the record, your obnoxiousness and condescension revealed itself anew and independently of any previous incarnations of said obnoxious and condescending behavior.

The last I heard was from this article:

"Today, Elián at home in Cardenas goes to school with two guards who change off every block. 'They won't allow anyone to get anywhere close to him,' an independent journalist who recently visited Cardenas and asked for reasons of safety not to be identified told WORLD. 'Not even the family here can talk to him.'"

I checked the source. Totally non-credible. The author is an amateur partisan, not a skilled reporter and writer. Elian "goes off" to school from where? Which family can't speak to him?

It is not in Fidel's interest to have the boy live anywhere but with his father. If the boy were not living with his father it would be international news immediately, and Fidel would be handing his enemies a sword. After scoring the biggest pulic relations victory in his entire career through Elian, he is not about to do something that stupid.

Just a note: Cuba executes or imprisons those who do not successfully escape. Mexico helps them across the border, has lobbiests in states like Florida, California, New Mexico pushing for Drivers Licenses for illegal aliens. Mexico also has a representative in their governemnt for mexicans living in California as if it is a state of Mexico.

We should not loose track that this is part of the push of Democrats to put "their DNC chosen one" up against the republican. It appears as the new DNC hitman, Gore has been sent to take out Pinelas. (The Clintoniones are at work.)

Not really. This family didn't follow the law, the rest of us have to follow. And were asked nicely numerous times.

Why does Elian have more of a right to stay here than the other millions trying to escape.
Does your compassion apply equally to the thousands of Haitians trying to leave a repressed country?
Should we bend the rules equally for them, as you want done for Elian.
( he didn't make it to shore on his own)
Can't just pick and choose.

" In other words, Elian's mother and the group she was with were attempting to enter the country illegally."

Incorrect, Dr. M.

US law has led the world community, advocating political asylum especially to refugees from communism. US law further allows a special distinction for Cuban refugees who reach American soil, having hazarded the crossing of shark infested waters drifting to American shores. Hungarians, Viet Namese, Soviet, and so many other refugees from totalitarianism have fled their nations to come to the USA as POLITICAL REFUGEES.

Mexican illegal aliens are economic refugees. Central American illegal aliens travel by land through Mexico to come to the USA to lodge the bogus claim of political asylum. If so they could have stayed in Mexico with its similar language, culture and proximity.
