On the one hand i find that to be unbelievable. On the other hand the moderates seeking freedom in Iran prove it is possible.
Iran is an interesting case. The parents of those seeking freedom fought to lose that freedom. A generation later, second thoughts have settled in and are only growing.

You can't say your religion is compatible with freedom, when its your religion thats enslaved by murderous terrorists with your approval! Until they rise up to fight for the freedom of thier religon from fundimentalist based tyranny, they are not compatable with anything but pure evil!
Our so-called "experts" spoon-feed the concept to us so that our dependence on muslim oil won't seem so distasteful. Most of the "experts" in academia hate America anyway. Since communism and socialism have failed, Islam is their last, best hope to destroy our way of life.

It's hard to get people to speak out or to actually show up at rallies, that doesn't mean that they don't agree with him. It's going to take a lot of courage over the coming years because people who are normally shy are going to need to step up (or at least show up). If they do this, they can take back their religion from those who tarnish it.

By the time any natural reformation of Islam occurs, we'll all be dead. The people are either brainwashed or cowed, and we've let things simmer to the boiling point for too long to do anything other than fight now.
What else can push it along is a major feminist movement as took place here in the U.S. The men were feminized as well, and rendered impotent (no offense, guys!) and mostly harmless. Yipes. That creates its own problems, but less danger to us, eh?
