I am proud to say that the first time that I ever voted for a president was for Reagan in 1980. Of course, considering that he was running against Carter, it was a very easy choice.

I was out on vacation - President Reagan is one of my personal heros and role models. I am saddened by his passing and thankful for his life. God bless Nancy and family and God bless Ronald Reagan.

I remember in the late 70's, when I was in vet school at Texas A&M, Reagan had a radio spot and I'd listen to him while driving down University Ave on my way home, thinking "This guy would make such a great president." And he did.

Well there was no SD to deny electoral votes to Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson, but SD voted for TR even in 1912, if I am not mistaken. I would imagine SD would vote to put McGovern on the monumnent, not Reagan. They seem to have forgotten that they removed McGovern in 1980 and elected Reagan that year -- considering the complexion of their congressional delegation in 2004. Maybe conservatives will never understand SD's fascination with liberal congressmen.

Wish I could say I was that smart.

I voted for Ford in 1976, but voted for (OMG) John Anderson in 1980 at age 26. I bought into the reckless cowboy hype about Reagan a little, but a bigger factor was a belief that a viable third party might be the answer.

I haven't messed up since, though.

Just got back from the White House, I stood in the rain in front of it for about an hour, just thinking about President Reagan. I had an umbrella in my hand. I didn't open it.

Just seemed somehow more appropriate to just stand there in the light rain. There were the usual flock of tourists there. I don't think that they knew yet. I just wanted to be alone with my thoughts, so I didn't tell them.

Every flag that I saw in the District was at half-staff.

Sitting here having a scotch in my awful apartment and remembering those days.

I plan to drive from Atlanta to DC for the funeral, I posted earlier today that we ought to set up a Free Republic vigil stand somewhere in DC for the 72 hours that the body lies in the Rotunda.

Any idea when the funeral will be yet?

He was the first president I voted for at the age of 19 , in '84

I wish I could say the same. I had just turned 18 when he was running for President against Jimmy Carter and John Anderson. I was a college freshman and clueless about politics. I bought the rhetoric of the liberal idealists on campus and my only memory of the night Reagan was elected was that I thought, "Oh, no! We will soon be in WW3!" I can remember exactly where I was standing in my dorm when the news came over the PA system. I thought it was one of those "I remember where I was when..." moments--I was sure we were doomed.

I actually had voted for Anderson that year. I had no clue about him or what he stood for. Maybe I should console myself with the fact that I didn't vote for Carter. :-)

The funny thing is that when my husband and I met, he told his dad that I voted for Anderson and his dad was VERY concerned about me, lol. By then I was a staunch conservative, but my husband had a hard time convincing him of that.
