Bomb Explodes at Russian Refinery
VOA News

Authorities in Russia say a bomb ripped through an oil tank at a refinery in the Stavropol area Saturday, causing extensive damage but no casualties.

The 5,000-ton oil tank was about one-third full when explosives detonated beneath it, setting off a blaze that took four hours to control.

Authorities say a second timebomb was found at the scene, but it failed to explode. The device was planted beneath a second tank at the Neftekumsk refinery, set to explode one hour after the first bomb.

There is no information who may have planted the bombs. Russian news agencies said authorities will tighten security measures in the Stavropol area, which borders Russia's Caucasus region. The Neftekumsk refinery is about 120 kilometers north of the separatist Russian republic of Chechnya.

Saturday's blast in Stavropol followed a bomb explosion at an outdoor market Friday that killed at least 10 people in the central Russian city of Samara. Authorities have labeled that a terrorist attack.

Nearly 40 people were wounded by the blast in Samara, Russia's sixth-largest city. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Russia's Interfax news agency also reports from Grozny, the Chechen capital, that two bomb explosions since Friday have killed one Russian soldier and wounded three other people.

Some information for this report provided by AFP and AP.

Oil tank blown up at Russian refinery

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MOSCOW -- A bomb detonated an oil tank at a refinery in southern Russia near Chechnya on Saturday, injuring no one but causing a fire that took hours to extinguish, officials said.

The early morning explosion at the refinery in Neftekumsk, about 800 miles south of Moscow, was caused by an explosive device equipped with a timer, said Vladimir Gerasimov, a spokesman for the local branch of Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry.

The Russians need to get a little more on board with the war on terror. Instead of opposing us about Iraq they would do well to share info with us.

Chechen terrorists are hooked into the global islamist terror bunch.

We could help the Russians, they could help us.

It's only logical.

Make no mistake, my friends. We *really* are at war, and the latest tactic of Al Qaeda, assisted by China, Venezuela and other factions within OPEC, and the left in the US is to attack us where we are weakest -- on our dependence on oil

expect more of the same until November, and beyond when these attacks don't have the desired effect of getting Kerry, their socialist candidate, elected...

One can say the same of the US, instead of opposing Russia on Saudi Arabia and helping Qatar find Russian agents who kill terrorist leader (even wanted in US but in assylum to US allie Qatar) and on case of KLA and Pakistan. Life is not one way streets.

Actually, US get almost no oil from Russia. Oil of that region go through Israel (and some to Israel) and to Asian market where it understrike Islamic oil.

Makes little difference where a fungilble product like oil comes from...... Any major reduction in the world supply will impact a country like the US that imports almost 60% of its usage....

Fair enough. Note that I was proposing cooperation and information sharing. I am not a one-way street either.

That the US gets no oil for Russia in this case does not matter: if oil supply in one part of the world is diminished, the price everywhere will be affected and go up -- demand that was met by this oil will seek supply elsewhere and make that "other" oil more valuable...
