Slate's Fred Kaplan: Risk of Bush Collapse Is Soaring
Slate ^ | June 3, 2004 | Fred Kaplan

Posted on 06/04/2004 12:52:04 PM PDT by Bonaventure

The walls haven't collapsed around George W. Bush, but the pillars are buckling, the floorboards are rattling, the inspectors are probing, and it doesn't look good.

In the White House and the Pentagon, senior officials face the prospect of criminal charges. The vice president is accused of malfeasance, at best. A key erstwhile ally in the war on terrorism has apparently turned against us in an act of criminal perfidy. And now the nation's spymaster has turned in his cloak—it's not yet clear whether he jumped or got pushed; either way, Bush's risk-rating has just soared.

Is this how they're going to be wasting ink over the next five months? Once again, they are attacking Bush with innuendo because they can't think of a good thing to say about Kerry. Have you noticed, they can't even imply that Kerry would be better or at least different. Bush has weathered a terrible couple of months--he hasn't really started the campaign yet because he doesn't want to peak too early. I see a number of important events lining up every other week until November that will keep POTUS on the front page looking very Presidential.

Just look at this week, visit the Pope, give him the Medal of Freedom from Congress, visit Italian WWII monuments, go to Normandy with all of the European Heads of State, watch our Vets given France's highest medal for their courage and sacrifice, host the G-8 here in America, invite the new Iraqi PM to attend and plead his case.

And what's Kerry going to be up to??----UUMM--who cares.

Furthermore, I've seen President Bush on Fox News several days in a row, giving speeches, and he seems the same as usual, calm, deliberate, focussed, and relaxed.

I like that in a President, I do b'lieve I'm going to vote for him AGAIN. ;-D

The left are desperate for a Bush collapse and every event that takes place from now until the election will be Bush's so called "collapse."

Everything that the left has tried to pin on W has not stuck and they are desperate.

The left's desperation seems to have increased exponentially of late. Maybe because Bush survived Abu Grahf and the economy is booming?

When drivel like this is posted we're supposed to add (Barf Alert) to the title.

.I don't see where Kaplan's coming from. How does the Tenet departure show that Bush's fortunes are declining?

It is called SPIN.......LEFIST SPIN.....any story EVEN IF positive (like the economy) can be spun whatever way you desire. Look for the clouds and you can find them. And of course the press/media is sure to take the NEGATIVE SLANT against conservatives at every turn.

Sorry -- I'm new enough to FR that I haven't mastered such nuance as the barf alert. But I see now that this article deserves a barf alert.

IMO, Bush's biggest blunder since getting elected was not immediately canning all the riff raff left over from the Clinton era.

"I like that in a President, I do b'lieve I'm going to vote for him AGAIN."

I think you have an excellent idea.

In the mean time, I'm gonna relax this summer, poke fun at these misfit, adgenda driven socialist hacks, drive my socialist "I hate GWB" neighbors nuts, all the while preparing for a great November celebration.

Yes, life is good, in spite of all the "gloom and doomers", here, and elsewhere. ;)

Maybe it's time to go to whitehouse.gov and send a message of support to the President. A pat on the back, so to speak, wouldn't take much time and might be the ray of sunshine through the gloom of the media bluster.
