During a commencement address at the U.S. Air Force Academy, President Bush compared the War on Terror to World War II and cast the Middle East as a critical front akin to wartime Europe. Define the term "rhetoric," and discuss how words can be used as "weapons" and to sway political opinion. Then, examine the choice of words used by President Bush in his speeches pertaining to Iraq and the War on Terror.
Inform students that Bush's address at the U.S. Air Force Academy was the second of six speeches before the June 30 handover of power in Iraq. Yesterday's speech was billed as a follow-up to Bush's address at the Army War College a week ago in which he discussed U.S. intentions for bringing democracy to Iraq.
Next, have students define the term "rhetoric" and discus how words can be used as "weapons" and to sway political opinion. Then, refer student groups to the CNN.com articles below and other resources to examine the choice of words used by President Bush in his speeches pertaining to the new Iraq and the War on Terror. Have students identify the words, phrases and terms that he uses and his target audience. Also, direct students to analyze the meaning of the president's statements and the political messages he is trying to convey to the United States and members of the international community. Direct each team to write a review of the president's remarks to be published in a magazine or newspaper. Then, invite a spokesperson from each team to present the review. After the presentations, have students discuss how Bush is using words as weapons and what he hopes will be gained by his rhetoric.

"An Obedient Dhimmi Is a Happy Dhimmi! Vote Kerry In '04! Allah Akbar -- !"
Some may call me over the edge for saying this ... But these people are a bunch of Commies
What the...? Are you kidding me? CNN's just bursting with objectivity today. Did they post any links to Joseph Goebbels bio for the kids to see where Bush learned his technique? Maybe they could photoshop him onto a tall balcony, watching goose stepping troops pass in review. Sheesh.
Yeah, I should have put a "BARF ALERT" on this one....
I believe this is called "indoctrination". |
Unbelievable!
Nah, you're not over the edge, they are.
UnFReepingbelievable!
The LIEberal lamestream media at it again! The Communist News Network hard at work indoctrinating the feeble-minded.
One can only hope that one of the students calls attention to their bogus assignment.

INTREP - INDOCTRINATION ALERT
Rush,
Earlier this week you mildly defended CNN as sometimes getting it right. Well, their new-found "fair and balanced" act maybe an attempt to salvage their sagging ratings, but the following link proves their bias and desire to shape the views of their future market -- the "youts" of America (found on FreeRepublic.com BTW):http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/2004/fyi/news/06/02/learning.bush.speech/
The "learning activity" asks students to analyze Bush's speech at the Air Force academy and then "define the term 'rhetoric' and discuss how words can be used as 'weapons' and to sway political opinion." The activity then asks the students to analyze other Bush pronouncements on Iraq and the War on Terror (using the handy-dandy links to CNN articles) and work in teams to create presentations. Then, "after the presentations, have students discuss how Bush is using words as weapons and what he hopes will be gained by his rhetoric."
Rush, this would be funny if it wasn't so SCARY! One wonders how many educators use the cnnstudentnews.cnn.com site to "create" lesson plans for them? Just more proof that parents need to know what is being taught to their children.
Years ago my neighbor and I were talking with her son and his friend one night .. back when they were in high school
The topic turned to Fidel Castro and the son's friend says he didn't see anything wrong with communists and how he his teacher told their class all about it. That he thought it was a pretty good deal that they took care of people.
WELL .. after picking our jaws up from the ground .. my friend and I set the record straight with this kid and gave him a whole knew education about what the commies are really like
I ended by saying to him .. if communism is sooooooo great .. then why are people risking their lives to get out of those countries
The ACLU should immediately force CNN to provide a similar "Learning Activity" involving Kerry speeches.
That's one line that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end!
I emailed it to Fox News. They might be able to have some fun with it. They LOVE to ridicule the ridiculous CNN.
Thanks, I hope this get more media attention.
(I won't hold my breath for CNN to cover it.)
I swear...if civil war comes to this country (and I pray that it isn't), I'm going for the media types first. These b@stards need to pay!
