Ohio Attorney General Speaks on the Importance of the Patriot Act

Press Conference Highlighting John Kerry’s Continued Efforts to Play Politics with Important Security Matters

COLUMBUS, OH – Today, Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien, and Bush-Cheney ’04 Ohio Valley Chair Jo Ann Davidson spoke at a press conference in Columbus, highlighting the importance of the Patriot Act in winning the War on Terror and John Kerry’s continued efforts to play politics with important security matters.

“When the President signed the Patriot Act in October 2001, he said the law ‘takes account of the new realities and dangers posed by modern terrorists. It will help law enforcement to identify, to dismantle, to disrupt, and to punish terrorists before they strike.’ Since that time, the Patriot Act has become a vital tool for law enforcement agents who are tracking down terrorists plotting inside our borders. Under President Bush’s leadership Americans are far safer today than we were just three years ago,” Petro said.

“As a county prosecutor, I have seen the effectiveness of the Patriot Act first-hand. We must remember that the war on terrorism is being fought every day in every city in every state, including right here in Ohio. That is why we have gathered here today in support of President George W. Bush, who has worked tirelessly to strengthen and secure our nation,” O’Brien said.

Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy, who was unable to attend today’s event, said, “The Patriot Act is a key weapon in the War on Terror and the men running for President have a responsibility to talk to Americans about how the Patriot Act is being used to protect our nation. We know that the President stands firmly behind this common sense law enforcement measure. What is concerning, is that Sen. John Kerry has flip-flopped yet again. He voted for the Patriot Act and now campaigns against it. President Bush is the steady leader these changing times demand.”

On Tuesday, May 25, Bush-Cheney ’04 released a new television ad, entitled “Patriot Act,” which highlights the critical role the Patriot Act plays in winning the War on Terror and John Kerry’s continued efforts to play politics with important security matters.

Today’s event will be followed by similar local events in Seattle, Washington; Jacksonville, Florida; San Diego, California; Clarksburg, West Virginia; Jersey City, New Jersey; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Four governors held a Patriot Act press conference on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 in Cincinnati and Vice President Dick Cheney also spoke about the importance of the Patriot Act on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Kansas City. Yesterday, former Attorneys General Dick Thornburgh and William Barr spoke at a Patriot Act press conference in Washington, D.C.

Democrats like Kerry, Hillary, Daschle, and Ted Kennedy are a greater threat to the freedoms and security of the United States than Al Quaeda.

The Patriot Act breaks down Gorelick's "wall" that would otherwise prevent the CIA from relaying information to the FBI, and that would otherwise prevent some national information from being shared with local law enforcement.

The Patriot Act also restricts who can see your banking (and other) personal information. Tighter data security controls are in place because of it, and without those controls banks would be even more free to outsource more jobs into such unsecure regions offshore as would provide them with lower cost labor.

No wonder so many Democrats hate it.

Jim Petro is a political veteran who has usually kept a low profile. Now he's speaking on a national issue. I wonder if he has ambitions for higher office?
