I ask only for information.

She's not here right now to ask, but I'd assume that she feels the leader of her church has been on the cusp of abandoning her.

The pope was a vocal opponent to war of any kind. He always will be. War should only be used as the very last resort, and that is what he said. It is said that he asked the President at the very last minute to go back to the UN and yet again request their assistance (we don't know for sure because the Pope's letter was never released publicly). But he never said the war was unjust, as some people insinuated he said. Publicly the Pope simply spoke out against war, as he is now speaking out against terrorism and the abandonment of Iraq.

but if he uses this opportunity to again chastise Bush in front of the world press, I would be most disappointed.

The pope never did this.

Then your wife isn't that much of a devout Catholic after all, if she's able to put her political views ahead of her faith. It's a shame she bought the anti-Catholic bunk some conservatives unfortunately spread, but that's her prerogative.

I think she won't be sorely missed.

Then I shall wait for the Pope to repudiate the fantastic claims of Archbishop Martino and other Vatican officials regarding the war in Iraq.

"Might this bring in more Catholic votes?"

Let's put it this way:

Soon, we can anticipate Dubya to bestow the same Presidential Medal of Freedom to Billy Graham...

...To be followed subsequently by awards to Bishop Sponge (gay vote), the Dalai Lama (the Buddhist vote) and a yet unidentified Wiccan "spiriual leader."

Since it does not directly deal with faith or morals, and the opinion fits within Catholic teaching, the Pope will not directly repudiate it. Sorry, you will be waiting a long time, the Archbishop has the right to his political opinion (which is what it is).

He may not have said anything directly, but cardinals and envoys speaking on his behalf and the behalf of the Vatican have.

The press is abuzz that Bush will get the criticism directly, and publicly, in return for his Freedom Medal. I hope that's just wishful thinking.
