The pope was a vocal opponent to war of any kind. He always will be. War should only be used as the very last resort, and that is what he said. It is said that he asked the President at the very last minute to go back to the UN and yet again request their assistance (we don't know for sure because the Pope's letter was never released publicly). But he never said the war was unjust, as some people insinuated he said. Publicly the Pope simply spoke out against war, as he is now speaking out against terrorism and the abandonment of Iraq.

Then I shall wait for the Pope to repudiate the fantastic claims of Archbishop Martino and other Vatican officials regarding the war in Iraq.
