President Bush will award Pope John Paul the Presidential Medal of Freedom Friday, the highest U.S. civilian award, a U.S. official said Thursday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the pontiff was being honored for "years of fighting for freedom and for his important moral voice."

The Pope gets a Medal of Freedom for being one of the most vocal opponents of the Iraq war?
I don't quite understand this either, but all in all, this Pope is a pretty terrific guy.

Bush is giving this award to JP II for freeing the people of Poland and reducing Communism without ever hiting Russia with a bomb, an invasion and an occupation.
Bush is saying If I had listened to you instead of Chalabi I would be better off.

The Pope was a vocal opponent to war. He had serious doubts about the Liberation of Iraq [he thought the UN should have been given more time] but has held strong positive views on the overthrow of terrorism. He now is a full supporter of the international community supporting Iraq and that we must have forces in Iraq until they can stand on their own feet.

Mrs. Bat - an extremely devout Catholic - says she'll leave the church if Il Papa rebukes Bush during his visit.

The Pope isn't an American. but he is named after the Beatles

The Pope calls the war in Iraq a "crime against peace," and now you want to honor him with a Presidential Medal of Freedom?

These days, I chalk up most of his messages as being the work of others since PJPII is losing his faculties, so take them with a grain of salt.
Heck, his work in support of Reagan admin efforts to support Solidarity in Poland are enough to warrant this award. That's good enough for me.

Was those his words, or some wacko cardinal? Also, Bush respects the man for his contribution to the end of the Evil Empire in the 1980s.

The Pope calls the war in Iraq a "crime against peace," and now you want to honor him with a Presidential Medal of Freedom? Yep. He deserves it.
Popes stand for peace.
Sometimes, they're wrong.
