Why would an "extremely devout Catholic" abandon the fullness of the faith and the means of eternal salvation for a religion of the state and secular politics?

I ask only for information.

Then your wife isn't that much of a devout Catholic after all, if she's able to put her political views ahead of her faith. It's a shame she bought the anti-Catholic bunk some conservatives unfortunately spread, but that's her prerogative.

I think she won't be sorely missed.
