"Family Ties" Tyke Busted for DUI

by Joal Ryan Jun 2, 2004, 5:43 PM PT

A tough week on the roads for a pair of former child stars.

In Colorado, ex-Family Ties tyke Brian Bonsall was rung up on drunken-driving charges, while in California, erstwhile Home Improvement clan member Zachery Ty Bryan was similarly accused.

The Bonsall arrest occurred Friday at 2 p.m. in the onetime prime-time kid's hometown of Boulder, Colorado, police there said.

Bonsall, now 22, was pulled over after an officer watched him pull over his Chevrolet SUV to the side of the road, let his passenger throw up out the window, and then return to traffic, Sgt. Kurt Matthews of the Boulder Police Department said.

Bonsall was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. His passenger, a 19-year-old man, was booked on suspicion of giving a fake name to police, Matthews said.

When police asked Bonsall how much he'd been drinking, he allegedly replied, "Plenty." When asked to be more specific, he allegedly said, a "half-pint of Jim Beam."

Matthews said police didn't recognize Bonsall as Michael J. Fox's TV kid brother from Family Ties, the NBC sitcom on which he appeared on as a preschooler from 1986 to 1989.

Bonsall, however, isn't an unknown to local authorities, Matthews said. "Brian isn't exactly a saint," he said. "He's had a record here."

Per one report, Bonsall, who has dabbled as a punk rocker post-Ties, was convicted of DUI in 2001.

Bonsall was released Saturday from the Boulder County Jail on $1,000 bail, officials there said. He has a July 19 scheduled court date.

Bryan, meanwhile, has a July 28 day in court following an arrest in Glendale, California.

Bryan, also 22, was clocked by police as traveling 100 mph on the Glendale Freeway in the early hours of May 26, the Glendale News-Press reported.

Upon being stopped, Bryan's alleged account of his drink total for the evening consisted of four beers and a vodka tonic, the paper said.

He was booked on suspicion of drunken driving and released from the local jail last Thursday, the News-Press reported.

Bryan played eldest son Brad Taylor on Home Improvement for the hit series' 1991-99 run.

As a presently grown-up actor, Bryan has done prime-time guest spots (Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.) and indie films.

Craig Stadler arrested for drunk driving in Ionia County

Craig Stadler talks to 24 Hour News 8 after being in court Wednesday.

(Ionia County, June 2, 2004, 4:30 p.m.) Star golf pro Craig Stadler tells 24 Hour News 8 that he's pulling out of the Farmers Charity Classic after being arrested for drunk driving in Ionia County.

Stadler says he had drinks at the Beltline Bar in Grand Rapids Monday night and was driving to Detroit for Media Day when he pulled off at the M-66 exit on I-96. Police say he drove out the wrong way at a gas station and that's when an officer pulled him over. Stadler then failed several alcohol tests. His blood alcohol level was .10.

Stadler was in court Wednesday morning and pled to a lesser charge of operating a vehicle while visually impaired. He won't have any jail time but will have to pay a $900 fine and attend alcohol awareness programs. The judge says Stadler received the same sentence anybody would, and his celebrity status did not play a factor in his decision.

The golfer says this is so devastating that he has to drop out of this week's tournament in Ada Township. He adds that he's embarrassed and sorry for what happened.

His blood alcohol level was .10.

It's a little unfair to put Craig Stadler in with those kids. He actually has a life as an adult, for one thing, and was right at the legal limit, for another. I'm thinking he can probably hold his liquor pretty good, too.

Proof that no good deed goes unpunished. I am kind of surprised the friend wasn't hooked up for public drunkenness. I mean, hurling out the side of the car in the wee hours is usually a pretty reliable symptom.

Bryan, also 22, was clocked by police as traveling 100 mph on the Glendale Freeway in the early hours of May 26, the Glendale News-Press reported.

MORE POWER!!!

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh!!!

(...tries to figure out how much it'd take to get The Walrus drunk and shudders at the thought...)

The legal limit is now down to .08 (national standard forced done almost every state's throat). Not that difficult to reach the lower standard.

On the other hand, the Beltline Bar is home of the "wet Burrito" which is larger then a football and slathered with a mystery sauce. Best washed down by margaritas or beer.

[rereads the Bonsall blurb]

...Oh, man...2 PM? I know it was a holiday weekend, but 2 PM? That's just embarrassing.

Gees took you long enough, everybody talking about family ties and not talking about his more important role as Alexander.

Two child stars and a golfer arrested for DUI

This story should have begun, "two child stars and a golfer walked into a bar..."

It's the darnedest thing, that this guy doesn't look the same as a 22-year-old as he did as a 4-year-old! Go figure.

Thanks for reminding me that there was a more annoying character on ST:TNG than Wesley Crusher.

This is sad:

.... As a child, Bonsall starred as Andy Keaton for three seasons on the NBC show that helped launch the career of Michael J. Fox. Following "Family Ties," Bonsall appeared on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the 1992 movie "Mikey," the 1993 film "Father Hood," and 1994's "Blank Check," among other TV and movie gigs.

Fan Web sites say he fronted a rock band, "Late Bloomers," at age 18. The police report said he is unemployed. link

"let his passenger throw up out the window"

Years ago, back in my drinking days, I was driving home early in the morning while severely hungover, when my transmission went out on my van, except for reverse.
I drove home about 2 miles in reverse and threw up out the window several times along the way, never even bothering to stop. A few people saw me and looked rather horrified, so I smiled and waved at them as I drove by, but they rudely didn't wave back.

I saw our mail carrier about half way on a 100 mile route
driving in reverse. He was wasn't drunk just crazy.
He finished the route in reverse without killing himself or any one else

They brought him in to extend the show. It was tanking before they brought him in. He was put on the Titanic after the iceberg.

Does this mean he was blind drunk?
