Well, I did it.
After bogeyman discovered last week that a small group of peaceniks stands at the Jefferson City Post Office on Wednesdays at noon, I decided it is time to respond. Because I had to rewrite the "We support our troops" sign to read "I support our troops," I arrived about 12:15 instead of noon. My time was well-spent, and well-received by many.
The Post Office sits on the corner of a T-intersection. Four peaceniks, including two Columbia "regulars," stood around the newspaper boxes in front of the building. One man held a big blue flag with the earth pictured in the center. One lady held the "Veterans for Peace: we support the troops, bring them home" sign. The other two held "War is not the A.N.S.W.E.R." signs.
I chose to stand across the street in the shade and at the top of the "T." I hoped to draw response from all three directions.
What a great experience. Moments after my arrival, a man crossed the street from the post office and thanked me for being there. He told me he works on the second floor of the building and many people there disapprove of the weekly "peace" protest. He said he spoke for all of them when he told me "Thank you" and he added, "It's about time." He asked if I wanted to stand in front of the Post Office, towards the opposite end from the peaceniks. I chose to stay at the top of the "T."
Shortly after he went back into the Post Office, a woman in a white SUV drove out of her way to stop and thank me. As she drove away, I noticed a "Semper Fi" bumper sticker and a big yellow ribbon on the back of her vehicle.
Several pedestrians thanked me as they walked by behind me. One man said, "Thank goodness I'm on this side of the street" (meaning where he was walking). Another man said, "I agree with all y'all 100%." (I was alone; must be really powerful. HA) A woman and her two sons, about 12 and 9, stopped and shook my hand and said thank you. The boys spoke first and all three expressed their appreciation for my presence. In addition to these and other pedestrians, several people in cars offered their thumbs-up. It was really fun, and made me glad I was there.
All was not positive, however. One 50-ish man with a long, white ponytail gave me a thumbs-up as he walked from my side of the street into the post office. As he crossed the street, I thought, "Wow, that's neat." But it was too good to be true. When he returned, he walked over to me and rescinded his former thumbs-up. We had a spirited conversation. He spouted all the liberal cliches and talking points. He changed subject and direction so fast it made my head spin. As he tried to blame everything on "fascist" Bush, I reminded him of several facts about the Clinton administration (including Sudan's offer of OBL, Bosnia-for-a-year-and-still-there, 2000 presidental election was decided according to the Constitution, among others). After that, he turned and walked away. I must admit, he caused my blood pressure to rise a bit, and momentarily put a damper on an otherwise wonderful hour.
One last comical observation (which occurred before Mr. Hippie) was two teen boys who joined the peaceniks for a few minutes. They took turns holding the "War is not the A.N.S.W.E.R." sign. As they left, they looked over at me. I turned my sign around so they could read, "Peace is Good. Freedom is Better." The look on their faces was priceless: HUH????? It was obvious that they didn't have a clue what it meant. I had to stifle a laugh. (On the other hand, it is terribly sad that those young people do not understand history or freedom. But that's another thread.)
All in all, it was an enjoyable 45 minutes. Thank you, military and military families, for your service and sacrifices. There are many Americans who recognize the importance of your work and we stand with you as we can.
Jeff. is not as wacky liberal as Columbia
hmmmmm ... maybe we could stand with the ANSWER crowd and get people to sign Nader petitions
Good job. Thanks for being there.

JC is the capitol of MO and is located in the middle of the state, halfway between St Louis and Kansas City (just south of I70).
Are you really just joining us today? How can anyone live in D.C. and not know about our D.C. Chapter and it's mighty work for the cause? Welcome home.
This former Missourian says thanks! Good job.
That took a lot of guts Prov. Kudos to you for bravery and duty beyond the call.
