(Bridgeport-WTNH, June 2, 2004 Updated 12:35 PM) _ A traffic nightmare along I-95 in Bridgeport this morning. The interstate was shut down in both directions after a tractor trailer caught fire.

This accident comes as no surprise to commuters who travel I-95 through the Bridgeport area. They say that section of road is no stranger to tractor trailer rollovers.

Edgar Gonzalez of Bridgeport says, “It happened again. It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable.”

Frustrated commuters face delays yet again near a stretch of highway that's seen it's share of troubles.

Al from Bridgeport says, “It's the third tractor trailer that's flipped over in the same spot in the last 3 months up there.”

The City of Bridgeport saw back-ups Wednesday morning after a tractor trailer caught fire on I-95 at Exit 27, shutting down the northbound lanes.

State police say the truck struck the center median just before 7:00 a.m., bounced off and caught fire. The driver suffered only minor injuries. Police say a civilian is being credited with saving his life. Both suffered only minor injuries.

Paul Balsano of the Bridgeport Fire Dept. says, “You never know on I-95. There's something on this stretch of road everyday with the trucks.”

Bridgeport firefighter Paul Balsano got the call Wednesday morning about the fiery truck crash.

“Doesn't surprise you anymore?”

“No, not at all.”

The accident added an hour onto Edgar Gonzalez's commute. He says, “I thought another bridge went down or something.”

To commuters, this stretch of road spells trouble.

“Bad news, that's right.”

Al says, “It's a mess. It's a horrible nightmare.”

Elaine Poplawski of Stratford says, “What else is new?”

“I'm just so used to going through here for so many years and having so many back ups, I don't think twice about it.”

Crews are in the final stages of clean-up on I-95 and all lane should be open shortly.

Police have released the truck driver's name, he's 71-year-old Sam Owens from New Jersey. Police say Owens was following too close to traffic and was driving too fast in a construction zone.
