Philippines to launch internet-based cockfight betting

Correspondents in Manila
June 1, 2004

THE Philippines is to launch on-line betting on cockfights in the next few weeks, officials said.

The internet-based betting system will be operated by the state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor) and Philweb Corp, which said it sees the game generating annual revenue of some 60 billion pesos (about $US1 billion).

Cockfighting is a popular sport in the Philippines and is considered the national sport next to basketball.

Philweb is the Philippines' leading integrated internet company. It had earlier signed a deal to operate Pagcor's online sports betting and casinos.

Great title.

"We Do Chickens Right" should have been the title of Larry Flynt's autobiography.

I don't personally approve of cock fighting but I have to give these people credit.

Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi once had a cockfight. However, that was over Hillary.

Need to change the name of the sport. That's all I'm saying. Not against the sport itself...just the mental images the current name calls forth.

Cock fighting has always been popular at least in Samar Southern PI

The men used to get bitched out about blowing what little money the family had on the sport.

That was close to thirty years ago I remember that.
