A pizza deliveryman won't face charges for fatally shooting a would-be robber several times when he was approached in a high-crime area, but his employer, Pizza Hut, has fired him for violating a company policy against carrying firearms.

Ronald B. Honeycutt, 38, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, says he's been delivering pizzas for 20 years and has always packed heat on the job.

According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, prosecutors announced Friday the Carmel, Ind., man will not face criminal charges.

It was company policy. They had to fire him. Why they have the policy could have more to do with insurance rates than gun politics. I wouldn't change your favorite pizza over it.

My the guy find an even better job. He's got guts.

Interesting, how could you shoot someone fatally several times?
Perhaps the shootee had 9 lives like a cat.

I wouldn't stop buying their pizza. I just think delivery people who work in high crime areas should start demanding high risk job differential pay. When their salary demands become higher than the insurance premiums, then Pizza Hut might change their policy.

So eat it. This is one manager's decision at a different store.

LOL! That's just silly.

If a company hires a guy and says "You cannot carry a gun on the job," yet he does it anyway and gets caught, what do you expect? Liberals don't follow rules. I thought conservates did.

I do not know why Pizza Hut has that policy. Maybe it is about insurance rates. Maybe it is about politics. Maybe it's about the cost of establishing capacity -- and therefore risk -- when it's just a relatively low-paying and transient job. I just think it is smart to have all the facts before condemning the Company.

I do not blame the guy for wanting to carry a gun in a high crime area. I do blame the guy for agreeing to a policy and then not following it.

The policy is company wide, and probably mirrors the policy of every other delivery and service industry policy. Every job I have ever had had a policy against guns at work or in the office. You are in la la land if you don't know that. I don't like it, but it's true. And when, in the past I have carried against that policy for reasons of my own, usually late hours leaving, I ~knew~ I was breaking policy (as this guy no doubt also knew) and my job would be at the mercy of my boss if it got discovered. That was one of the risks I weighed.

The decision about whether to fire him or not was still likely up to the manager there at that store.

Every service and delivery place has the same policy. Bus drivers, delivery drivers, etc are not allowed by the company to carry their own gun where shooting and defense are not part of their job description. No company ~allows~ that, unless they are a secure delivery role where being armed is very much a part of their job. For that, they are trained.

It would be silly to allow personal firearms as a company policy without training. Might as well just sell the business to the nearest attorney now and get it over with.

True, but many owners of small companies look the other way-

My husband is in the service industry and flat refuses to go into east or south Austin at night unarmed...and his boss knows it!

(But this IS in Texas where self defense is still an acknowledged right. :)

The same Texas that won't let you carry concealed on your own time without a training class? HA! We have better gun law than that here in Washington State! ;~D

Unfortunately that is company policy in most places. My company has no such policy and I usually carry if I am in the office. However, I am currently on a plant site working, and just like every other manufacturing plant I know of, they have a "no firearm" policy. I do leave my weapon in my car in the parking lot because the likely hood of being caught is nearly nil. If I were to bring it into the plant and got caught, I would be kicked off plant site and very likely fired. That is the chance I would be taking. It is a privately owned manufacturing plant and they can set their own rules.
The Pizza Hut guy knew the risks and made a decision based on the threat level. As it turned out, it was most likely a good decision, it may have saved his life, but it was in violation of the agreed to, private company, rules. They had to fire him.
I have made similar decisions when traveling to states that don't allow firearms. I weigh the risk to my life, the odds of getting caught, and the penalty for getting caught. If the threat to my person is greater than the threat by the law, then I carry. If I get caught there is no point wining about it - I new the risk going in.

I know I sound like an ornery old cuss, but I don't give a fat rat's behind what the state will or won't 'let' me do- they don't have squat to say about it! :)

Oh, I thought you were braggin' about the great state of Texas! I like Texans, I just find it remarkable that Texas has a more nanny-state concealed carry law than Washington is all...

I think if you get caught not following the law in the state, you will find they have 'squat' to say.
