A "kinder and gentler" Jihad from the OBLCrew

Really. They're poets and everything...

I love you my brothers, I hold you so dear, For you are glad tidings, so lend me an ear, And hear the good news of a blessing so clear, Of the help from Allah, and a victory near.

For you is no grief, nor there any fear, So keep up your spirits, and fight O my dear, For the best of the rewards is for you, so let's cheer, At the help from Allah, and a victory near.

Allah has loved you, so why shouldn't we? Love you and cherish you and be ready, To help and support you from far and from near, O the help from Allah, and a victory near!

So fight O Mujahid, do not turn your back, For you have the blessings your enemies lack, The Pleasure of Allah you're holding so dear, And the help from Allah, and a victory near.

So fight O Mujahid, until you subdue, Your enemies and their supporters too, While Believers pray for you and enemies jeer, Comes the help from Allah and a victory near.

Allah is your Lord and Islam is your way, Only for this you are slain and you slay, These are the principles you must adhere, For the help from Allah and a victory near.

So come let us call on our Lord, O Allah, Please help and protect our brothers, Allah! Accept their sacrifice and prayers, Allah! And grant them a victory - complete and clear, And let them be thankful to You when they hear, Of the help from Allah and a victory near. O the help from Allah, and a victory near! "

Yahoo Continues to Host al Qaeda Mouthpiece:
Funds Managed by Fidelity Investments Account for 7 Percent of Yahoo Stock Ownership

With only two members, the new Yahoo sponsored Global Islamic Media Center might at first be considered to be a far cry from the 6,500 members the group used to boast.

However, Global Islamic Media (GIM) still has every indication of being just as much an al Qaeda affiliate as when it had thousands of adherents.

Its messages also point to a new al Qaeda web site, located at www.hostinganime.com/neda2/page/alakat.htm . At press time this site was still on line.

The fact that Yahoo continues to allow this group to stay on line is puzzling. Like any business Yahoo depends on consumer confidence and the public's willingness to buy what it offers. As a Hoover Company Profile noted, "Yahoo generates most of its revenue from banner advertising sales and sponsorship ads, but is diversifying its revenue streams; the company also sells search engine result listings to advertisers, collects subscription fees, and charges for business services such as Yahoo Personals and Yahoo Mail."

Rotating advertisements for companies that include Verizon Wireless run behind a number of messages ( http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/globalislamicmediacenter/message/77 )

Verizon Wireless did not respond to a request for comment, but in a previous interview concerning placement of Verizon Wireless advertisements on the GIM site, Jim Gerace, a spokesperson for Verizon Wireless, said  "We have to figure out how this happened and I have to do our own diligence. If this is true this is not what we intended to do, and we would protest."

Yahoo has not commented on its continued hosting of the GIM group other than to send out this statement (in response to a previous request for information) from Mary Osako, Yahoo's Director of Communication. She said that those wishing to use Yahoo Groups "agree to not use the Service to upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable. When notified of content that may be in violation of our Terms of Service, we are committed to reviewing each report and taking appropriate action, generally within 24 hours."

 However, GIM remains on Yahoo.

Interestingly, portfolio managers of some funds managed by Fidelity Investments, a huge mutual fund company, have chosen to invest quite substantially in Yahoo.  Money from funds managed by Fidelity Investments (also known as FMR Corporation) according to public filings account for 7.3 percent of Yahoo's common stock ownership (Yahoo co-founders David Filo and Jerry Yang own 6.9 percent and 5.6 percent Yahoo common stock respectively).

According to an online description ( http://biz.yahoo.com/ic/40/40150.html ) "FMR Corp. is ‘semper fidelis' (ever faithful) to its core business. The financial services conglomerate, better known as Fidelity Investments, is the world's #1 mutual fund company. Serving some 18 million individual and institutional clients, Fidelity manages nearly 340 funds and has approximately $775 billion of assets under management. Among its notable offerings is the Magellan Fund, which was for many years the US's largest. The founding Johnson family controls most of FMR; Abigail Johnson, CEO Ned's daughter and heir apparent, is the largest single shareholder with about 25%."

A spokesman for Fidelity said the organization does not comment on companies where funds are placed, but added that the choice where to invest is made by portfolio managers.
GIM's al Qaeda connection is routinely accepted by many analysts. Paul Eedle, a British investigative reporter who specializes in radical Islam, was interviewed by CNN in March. He commented, "The Global Islamic Media list .... puts out a stream of statements, 30 to 50 a month, explaining the group's strategy and claiming responsibility for its actions, including the Madrid (train) bombings ... "

In his interview with CNN Eedle also referred to a statement published on GIM that referred to the then upcoming train bombings in Spain.  He said, "This was a strategy document published in December by the Global Islamic Media list which described in enormous detail a strategy for driving America out of Iraq by attacking what al Qaeda thinks is the weakest link in the coalition, that is, Spain. So it prefigured the Madrid bombings. I think that shows us just how, even though there are semi- independent cells of al Qaeda around the world, it's the strategy coming from the center, from particularly Ayman al-Zawahri, that is really keeping the whole group on course."

According to Eedle, the Internet has been a wonderful creation for al Qaeda. "The Net creates a virtual meeting place, a glue that holds together al Qaeda, even though its leadership has been holed up in the mountains and is now surrounded."

The Yahoo GIM site is well known for the distinctive parchment type background on all of its messages. Analysis of the sending data of one of the messages showed that the parchment is being stored on the servers of www.jihadunspun.net, a controversial pro-Islamic site that has been run out of Canada by an individual who allegedly converted to the Islamic faith after 9/11.

E-mails to www.jihadunspun.net asking for information about whether the group has a relationship with the administrators of Yahoo's GIM  were not answered.

GIM made use of another Internet service provider to store its distinctive logo. It was housed at  www.bayanit.com/upload/protected/psddd1.jpg, a Sudanese online upload service. The site's U.S. registrant and administrator is listed as being in Peoria, AZ.

A company spokesman – originally from the Sudan –  was not pleased when he learned from a reporter that the GIM logo was being stored on his company's servers. After removing the logo he said, "This is very nasty. I feel bad when I found that these terrorists used this service. I love (America) and want to help it. I (have fought) Islamic fundamentalism since I was in high school. I am a Muslim but not like this. They are criminals."

VIETNAMESE MILITARY ATTACKS CHRISTIAN DEMONSTRATORS

By Jeremy Reynalds
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  (ANS) -- Some of the Christian Montagnards conducting peaceful demonstrations inside Vietnam’s Central Highlands calling for an end to years of religious persecution and confiscation of their ancestral lands were brutally attacked, and others reportedly killed, by Vietnamese paramilitary forces. (Pictured: Demonstrators holding banner).

According to a statement by Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org/english/docs/2004/04/14/vietna8430.htm), “The human rights situation for Montagnards in the Central Highlands has plummeted to a new low,” said Brad Adams, executive director of the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch. “Vietnam’s policy of repression of Montagnard Christians is only fueling the unrest.”

As Human Rights Watch (HRW) pointed out, the movement by indigenous minority Christians—collectively known as Montagnards—seeks religious freedom by peaceful means and the return of ancestral lands in the Central Highlands.

According to HRW, many Montagnards remain missing since the demonstration. Some stayed away from their villages after the demonstrations knowing that the police planned to make arrests.

According to HRW, “Others have been arrested and their current whereabouts are unknown. Some may be wounded or dead. The provincial hospital in Dak Lak reported 40 injured people (that) night. Montagnards living near Buon Emap in Cu Mgar district, Dak Lak province reported that all of the men in Emap village disappeared the night of April 10. It is not known if they were arrested, or went into hiding.”

In a statement issued by HRW, Adams said “We are extremely concerned that so many are missing or being held incommunicado by the police, and about the possibility of torture and mistreatment ... The Vietnamese government should immediately allow independent observers into the region.”

In a recent press release issued by the Montagnard Foundation, organizational president Kok Ksor echoed the concerns expressed by HRW.

Ksor said the group’s Easter demonstrations were fact based on Christianity and Gandhi’s principles of non-violence. However, he added, “Some of the demonstrators, after brutally (being) attacked by the Vietnamese military and police forces armed with crude weapons such as clubs and metal bars, acted in self-defense.”

Ksor said that Montagnards living inside Vietnam organized the demonstrations and the Montagnard Foundation offered its support. He added, “It is the right of all the Vietnamese people to demonstrate peacefully according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ratified by Vietnam.”

Ksor said he and his fellow countrymen are far from being terrorists as the Vietnamese government is claiming. He said, “We only want our human rights and indigenous rights respected according to international law. We also have no word for ‘independence’ in our language but we do have a word for ‘freedom.’ It is this word ‘freedom’ (with) which the government of Vietnam falsely claims that we are seeking independence.”

According to Ksor, the Montagnards are desperate for help. “Our people are crying out for help. Our most immediate concern for our people is that international must be allowed into the Central highlands to monitor the ongoing human rights abuses as recommended by the 2002 Human Rights Commission.”

He added, “The Vietnamese communist government presents defamatory opinions as fact, and use underhanded tactics to discredit any organization that dares to object to their misdeeds,” Ksor said. “It is also trying to link our organization with other groups that have been using violence. I thus advise the international community to carefully examine any and all information that the government of Vietnam puts forth.”

That notwithstanding, Ksor added, “As a Christian I pray not only for our brothers and sisters inside Vietnam who struggle for freedom but also I pray for the Vietnamese communist authorities that persecute us.”

In a related story but in the same release issued by the Montagnard Foundation Ksor said that in addition to covering up the Easter Massacre the Vietnamese Government has also told the United Nations that both Ksor and his organization are terrorist.

Ksor said that the government controlled newspapers even dubbed him a “a desperate terrorist attempting to set up a separatist Degar State in the Central Highlands.”

HRW reported that during the last year, the Vietnamese government has stepped up its persecution of Montagnard Christians, particularly those thought to be following “Dega Protestantism.”

“This is” HRW reported, (www.hrw.org/english/docs/2004/04/14/vietna8430.htm)
“a form of evangelical Christianity banned by the Vietnamese government, which links it to the increasingly popular Montagnard movement for return of ancestral lands and religious freedom. Prior to the Easter protests, authorities had dispatched hundreds of additional police and military to the region—often placing police officers in the homes of villagers suspected of political activity or returnees from Cambodia—and established military checkpoints along the main roads.”

Ksor also accused the Vietnamese Government of “trying to subvert the democratic principles of the United Nations by intimidation and threats.”

He added, “They have formally declared to the UN that the .... Transnational Radical Party (TRP) ... of (which) I am a member of the General Council ... be sanctioned and suspended from the United Nations forums.”

According to its web site (www.radicalparty.org/welcome2.html) the TRP is “an association of citizens, parliamentarians and members of government of various national and political backgrounds who intend to achieve, through nonviolent Gandhian methods, a number of concrete objectives aimed at creating an effective body of international law with respect for individuals and the affirmation of democracy and freedom throughout the world.”

Ksor said, “I cannot stress the urgency of how our people inside Vietnam cry for help and also what a terrible injustice will be done if Vietnam is permitted to dictate to the United Nations who can and who cannot be allowed to speak in the United Nations. I am not a terrorist and the Transnational Radical Party must be allowed to support myself and other repressed peoples in the United Nations.”

Ksor said that in mid July the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations will decide whether or not he is a terrorist and whether the TRP will be permitted to speak freely for oppressed peoples in the United Nations.

“Vietnam cannot be allowed to hoodwink the United Nations in this fashion. These intimidation tactics are a political stunt to prevent word of Hanoi’s brutal human rights abuses from reaching the ears of the international community,” Ksor said.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Tue Jun 08 2004 00:19:20 GMT-0700.

Somalia

June 7, 2004

This Travel Warning is being issued to remind Americans of continued concerns about the security situation in Somalia and to clarify registration procedures. This supersedes the Travel Warning of June 2, 2004.

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against all travel to Somalia, including the self proclaimed “independent Republic of Somaliland”. Inter-clan and inter-factional fighting can flare up with little warning, and kidnapping, murder, and other threats to U.S. citizens and other foreigners can occur unpredictably in many regions. There is no U.S. Embassy or other U.S. diplomatic presence in Somalia.

There have been attacks against foreigners in the self-declared "Republic of Somaliland" in northern Somalia. The Sanaag and Sool Regions in eastern Somaliland, bordering on Puntland (northeastern Somalia), are subject to insecurity due to potential inter-clan fighting. There were several fatal attacks against international relief workers, including Westerners, throughout Somalia and Somaliland in late 2003 and early 2004. In addition, serious fighting has occurred in the Mogadishu area, the Puntland region in northern Somalia, and the districts of Gedo and Bay (especially the vicinity of Baidoa) in the south. Territorial control in the Mogadishu area is divided among numerous groups; lines of control are unclear and frequently shift, making movement within this area extremely hazardous.

U.S. citizens are urged to use caution when sailing near the coast of Somalia. Merchant vessels, fishing boats and recreational craft alike risk seizure and their crews being held for ransom, especially in the waters near the Horn of Africa and the Kenyan border.

The U.S. Government cannot provide services to U.S. citizens in Somalia. U.S. citizens who plan to travel to Somalia despite this Travel Warning are urged to register and obtain updated information on travel and security from the U.S. Embassies in neighboring countries. Travelers to the self-declared “Republic of Somaliland” should register with the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, and travelers to Puntland or southern Somalia should register with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.

The U.S. Embassy in Djibouti is located at Plateau du Serpent, Boulevard Marechal Joffre, Djibouti City; telephone (253) 35-39-95. The after-hours telephone number is (253) 35-13-43. The mailing address is Ambassade Americaine, B.P. 185, Djibouti, Republique de Djibouti. The workweek in Djibouti is Sunday through Thursday. The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is located on United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya; telephone (254) (20) 363-6000; after-hours emergencies (254) (20) 363-6170. The mailing address is P.O. Box 606 Village Market,
00621 Nairobi, Kenya, or Unit 64100, APO AE 09831, USA.

U.S. citizens should also consult the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Somalia, the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, and the East Africa Public Announcement, which are located on the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov. American citizens may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States or 317-472-2328 from overseas.
