MILAN, Italy (Reuters) - Italy arrested an Egyptian man considered to be a mastermind of the Madrid train bombings in the first Europe-wide swoop on Islamic militants linked to the March attack, judicial sources said Tuesday.
"Mohamed the Egyptian" was seized after a three-month probe by Italy's anti-terrorist unit and Italian intelligence and he was thought to be the head of a Moroccan radical Islamist cell, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera said
Italian Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said militants had been planning more attacks as police swooped as part of an operation across Europe. He said the swoop was aimed at a group "close to al Qaeda."
Police in Milan arrested Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, known as "Mohamed the Egyptian," and another man as part of cross-border raids into the March 11 bombings that killed 191 people in the Spanish capital, the judicial sources said.
Ahmed was considered "one of the masterminds" of the Madrid bombings, a Spanish Interior Ministry spokesman said.
"Raids are under way in Belgium, Spain and France as well as in Italy," an Italian judicial source said. Another judicial source said: "It is coordinated at the European level."

Liu said that the Group of Eight plays an important role in solving international issues, and they should fully consider the concerns and interests of all countries at the summit, and take steps to help developing countries solve difficulties and promote the common prosperity of all countries.
"We hopes this year's G-8 summit will further make progress in this aspect," said the spokesman.
Liu said the Chinese side attaches great importance to the cooperation with the Group of Eight, and will further play a constructive role in keeping the peace of the world and realizing the common prosperity of all countries.
The three-day G-8 summit began Tuesday in the United States. Leaders of the seven industrialized countries, namely the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the president of Russia are attending the summit.

US Approves Anthrax Blood Test

The US Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved the first blood test for anthrax. Anthrax-laced letters killed five Americans shortly after September 11 2001.
Although the bacteria are easily eradicated early on, most people do not know they have contracted the disease until days later. By then, it is usually too far advanced to cure.
The new blood test, developed by the biotechnology group Immunetics, can detect both inhaled anthrax - the illness's most deadly form - and skin contaminations. Victoria Griffith, Boston

Iraqi gunmen display Turkish hostages

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi gunmen displayed seven Turkish citizens Tuesday, saying they had kidnapped the men because they worked for Americans.
Videotape obtained by Associated Press Television News showed three of the hostages surrounded by armed men wearing masks. Four other hostages were shown to reporters separately.
The tape showed three men crouching on the floor, holding passports opened to the photo page.
Six masked men were standing behind the hostages. One was holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and two were holding assault rifles.
The hostages were sitting against the backdrop of the old Iraqi flag, held by some of the kidnappers.
"We urge the Muslim Turkish people...to stand by the side of their Iraqi, Muslim brothers in their crisis by refusing to work with the occupation forces," said one of the masked men.
"We also ask the companies that deal with the occupation forces to cancel their contracts and withdraw its personnel from Iraq in order for the hostages to be released," the masked man said.
At the end of the statement he said "God is great" three times.
Dear Lord. I only scanned it, but it is horrific and confirms my worst fears. I think most of us here have figured their plan out, in the months that we have been digging.
What date was suggested? (I didn't get that far) The June 23 date?
